"Fire resistant" external HDD backup enclosure?

Sarra

So, I understand that data that you need, or really, really want, to keep safe should be backed up on failure-resistant local storage, and also backed up off-site.

But, what if it's something you don't want to back up off-site, but want to be able to recover if there has been a fire?

That got me wondering if there is a reputable option for fire-resistant storage.

So, does it exist? And if it does, is it worth it? I've got close to 350GB of music, video, and some other odds'n'ends data I want to back up, but my internet isn't fast enough to reasonably back up over the internet... And I don't want my stuff floating around on the internet, either. Why not a local backup that is fire-resistant?

Or should I just suck it up and get a cloud based backup service?

Yes it does exist:

But I wouldn't say it's perfect. For one thing, fishing the damn thing out might be a challenge.

'fishing it out' after is... Seriously, I don't care. XD If there's a fire that destroys my residence, I don't care as long as I can get my data back.

Dang. Linus looks like he's 12 in that video... lol

lmao Yeah, but the point is that it's likely to be possible to get it back, instead of 'looking at the puddle of molten data' on the ground.

That is if the building doesn't collapse or the they the building too unstable to recover anything hahahaa. Good luck fishing that thing out of a pile of burnt rubble.

Oh, yeah. The room that the computer stuff lives in is wood frame, with gravel under it. There's no second floor, and nothing beyond wood and plaster in the room itself, so it would be on the 'easier' side of the scale to recover it. Rest of the house is on a concrete foundation, and it's a wood structure...

This was mostly due to the fires we had here last September, and now I'm (sadly) stuck here for another summer, possibly 4 more. 😧

Id realy go cloud backup, as it not only protects you from fire its can protect from things like theft and power surges also.

Yeah, theft isn't much of a problem here. Power surges also aren't really a problem...

You never know when a psu is gonna die and cook drives, id still keep the data off site.

Also there only fire safe for so long, and its not a guarantee, id trust cloud much more.

It would take me roughly a week to back up everything... And my internet wouldn't be usable during that time. o.x

You can limit speeds so the internet is still usable.

And after the first upload, it should be pretty quick and only upload changes.

Yeah, it would still take over a week of continuous uploading...

I also upload to my youtube, so...
