If you know what and what not to do, then you won't get a virus.

Sure, someone could stick a file on your computer, but as long as you say "no" you'll be fine.

Just make sure you aren't an admin account.

Do you go to shady sites all the time?
Just click "yes!" to downloads?

Regular logic and experience. Does not guarantee, because if you're used to visiting dodgy sites you need AV.

If you know what you are doing the chance lowers significantly.

yes, I, like basically everyone, download files from the internet. Anyone who downloads any files from any place can get a virus.

False. I download files all the time and the last time I've never gotten a virus. If you use caution while web browsing and don't download files from or go on websites that don't seem trustworthy you won't get viruses. Only antivirus I've ever used is Windows Defender, and I've never even needed that.

I mostly speak from my own past experience from similar problems. My solution may not work for you, but I'll always try my best to help as much as I can. If you want me to see your reply, make sure to quote my comment or mention me @WaggishOhio383, and I'll get back to you as soon as possible.

The only reason I'm using an "anti virus", is for the proper firewall and better online threat protection than the built-in stuff in Windows. I use Bitdefender total security. I reactivate the trial version every 3 months or so, haven't paid them a single cent in the past 2 or 3 years now.

I often visit not so "legit" websites(and I'm not just talking torrents here) and more often than not there are ads/3rd party scripts on those that redirect to websites that try to infect my PC at every turn. Not rare that I get a notification saying a threat was blocked or a suspicious webpage was prevented from loading, etc... Is it placebo? Is it actually a threat? I don't know, I don't care, I don't want to see them so good online protection it is.

But for the casual user who mostly only browse the web normally, facebook and what not, Windows Defender + an adblock should be more than enough to curb 99% of the threats.
