Should I go AMD or Intel ?

Hi ! I'm looking to upgrade my i5-7600 and my GTX 1050 ti and I was looking for the i5-10600K as a CPU upgrade. I'm wondering if it is better for my money to go with AMD or stay with Intel. Should I wait for the 11th generation or straight up go with team Red ? I use my PC for mid range gaming, light editing, virtualisation, Distro hopping and work.

Thanks in advance!

Make your own way in the CPU world, go Cyrix! 🤪

But in all seriousness, every fanboy here on LTT will scream at you AMD and if you dare to even suggest Intel is an option, you will be tarred, feathered, and forced to use Windows Bob.

I use Xeons exclusively, but I use workstations for work, and am only a slight gamer.

I believe if you want to go Intel you should wait for their next line up.

Buying 10600k right now should do the job perfectly fine and you would be happy but it's not a "good" deal since the new gen is coming soon.

That being said, for now if you don't want to wait for next Intel line up, I believe you have better options with AMD.

There are pros and cons to both.

Lets start with cons for AMD:

- Likely the last gen for AM4

- Now higher pricing (zen3)

- Limited to no current availability

Pros for AMD:

- Stock cooler included with CPU

- Slightly cheaper motherboards that allow to OC CPU and Memory

- Currently uses PCIe 4.0 (not that this matters really)

- Wide range of CPU options on a single platform

- Outright better CPUs at this time in nearly all applications

Cons for Intel:

- Expensive motherboards if you want to OC

- No stock cooler (for 'K' skew)

- Not quite as good in terms of $ / performance

Pros for Intel:

- Should you like to upgrade the CPU to 11th gen you can do so with a Bios update

- Actually available

- Still very high end performing CPU's despite losing the upper hand to AMD

Example of the entry cost for an R5 5600x, you can OC (assuming USD):

PCPartPicker Part List
Type Item Price
CPU AMD Ryzen 5 5600X 3.7 GHz 6-Core Processor $300.00
Motherboard Gigabyte B550 GAMING X ATX AM4 Motherboard $129.99 @ B&H
Memory Team T-FORCE VULCAN Z 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200 CL16 Memory $59.99 @ Newegg
Prices include shipping, taxes, rebates, and discounts
  Total $489.98

At the end of the day the cost is near identical. If you want the best performance per $ now get the 5600x (when available), or you can still get the very capable 10600k, and bank on Intel hopefully having competitive 11th gen CPUs.

It really comes down to what your going to use it for and your budget then we can help balance out best options,

Like are you only gaming?what games mostly? Video editing? Streaming? Live stream and game? Live stream game and create content simultaneously? Lol

Ryzen 5800X3D(Because who doesn't like a phat stack of cache?) GPU - 7700Xt

                                                           X470 Strix f gaming, 32GB Corsair vengeance, WD Blue 500GB NVME-WD Blue2TB HDD, 700watts EVGA Br

~Extra L3 cache is exciting, every time you load up a new game or program you never know what your going to get, will it perform like a 5700x or are we beating the 14900k today? 😅~

So in terms of just performance AMD and Intel are pretty tight in single threaded apps, though AMD now definitely has a bit of a lead. AMD is completely in the lead on multicore performance.

I flipped over to AMD with Ryzen 3000 series after being with Intel for something like 10+ years and I honestly could not think of a single reason I'd personally buy an Intel CPU right now. That said some people obviously still like them so they might be able to explain the reasons for buying one better then I can.

The one thing to keep in mind will be stock, AMD chips are really hot items with consumers right now so they can be harder to come by.

if all u want is a stable pc that is in stock, go intel, probably a 10600k, if you want the fastest cpu, wait for amd to be in stock.
