i5 9300H only one core gets very hot after undervolting

angramainyu

hello guys, getting straight to the point i was undervolting my i5 9300h on lenovo y540 using throttlestop. After undervolting i realise that only one core gets very hot(which triggered Prochot at 98C).

I already changed my paste twice now with making sure the heatsink properly mounted.

However undervolting really improves thermal ( i was getting above 90C on all cores before undervolt), it just this one core seems to be doing a lot of hard work XD1270713917_Screenshot2021-01-01204438.thumb.png.4c317c22bd6f6eacce8b9efa4763e862.png1658834340_Screenshot2021-01-01204513.thumb.png.fe4cff4e3cdbd01b0ffa1ac50640e584.png867940712_Screenshot2021-01-01204651.png.5af9fa8ac03a2e2b609b16a5f05b6d4f.png

On quick note, on Turbo Ratio Limit, i changed all on 4.0 but still, only one core gets hotter than others.

Probably lemon heatsink or thermal paste issue

@angramainyu I agree with @genexis_x

The cores are equally loaded in your screenshot. A 20°C difference between the first two cores is almost always a sign of a heatsink that is not sitting square to the CPU cores or the thermal paste needs to be replaced.

It's quite common in Y540. That's why I'm suspecting.

If you already repasted twice and still have the same issue, it's probably your heatsink. Also had the same problem with Y530, but the temp difference is not as high as yours (mine is around 10c). And same like you, core 1 and core 3 are hotter than 2 and 4.

So what is OP supposed to do now? RMA?  Sand it down? (jk) 🤷🏼
