How far away are we from Cloud Computing being common in games?

TheArium

So I was wondering how far you guys think we are from paying a monthly subscription á la Spotify to stream high end 3D gaming sessions to an otherwise inferior machine (for instance a laptop) in order to game?

I have been considering the possibilities lately and it would result in casual gamers being able to play the latest games on perfect details without investing heavily in hardware that they might not be able to justify buying.

Consequently, is this what Nvidia Grid aims to do or have I misunderstood something?

i think it will take a while, i mean isps and network companies are still complaining about video streaming, it might need some time to become a niche thing, probably wont be common anytime soon, then again, noone knows what direction it's going to go in, it could be 15 years and it could 5 years.

personal cloud is what i am excited for.

Of course the alternative is to stream the game assets to the computer and store them temporarily while they are in use.

Like others here, I think it's going to be a long, long time before the infrastructure is up to the standard for this type of service to see wide-spread adoption. I think it'll be at least 10 years. Again, I'm more excited about the personal cloud. Steam in-home streaming is the first step towards this.

It appears only me and Mattheus have heard of OnLive. The tech has been here for a few years already.

I have no idea OnLive existed. How good is it? Does it, for instance, mean you can play Battlefield 4 on a mid range laptop like you would on a high end desktop?

I'm not sure of the necessary specs but it's free to try so you should give it a shot.

Internet needs to speed up quite a bit.  Maybe once 10gb/s is common it will be the in thing console players.

Beneath this mask there is more than flesh. Beneath this mask there is an idea, Mr. Creedy, and ideas are bulletproof.

As I get older I get angrier more cynical, meaner. I feel some warning posts coming. I feel a ban coming. I was warned.
