should i get r7 5800x or 64gb ram

so my current specs

-rtx 2060 - soon to b either 3070 or 3080 (when they become available lol)

-r5 3600 

-16gb ram 2133mhz

-b450 aorus elite

-850w power supply

So looking to upgrade my cpu or memory - i do currently have money for either the r7 5800x or 64gb 3600mhz or 3200mhz ram with a 3080/3070 (depends what's available).

Btw I'll probably be able to get both soon just asking which one to get first just in case it takes longer for me to save for the other component.

I don't understand your thought process here. Are you just desperate to spend money?

 

Nobody needs 64 GB of RAM so scrap that idea. 16 GB is more than enough for anyone.

Unless you play at 4K you also don't need to buy a 3080.

 

- Buy 16 GB of 3200 or 3600 Mhz RAM with timings of 16 or lower.

- Buy the 3070 if you still need the gaming performance.

- Keep the CPU since it is more than enough for the 3070.

 

When it comes to upgrading you should wait until there is an actual need, else you'll upgrade and one day later there is a new product and you sit there having spent hundreds on nothing while having outdated hardware. I assume you're not rich so save the money until you actually need upgrades. A 5800X would barely give you any improvements over the 3600. The purpose of a CPU is to match the GPU unless you do work that heavily relies on a CPU. As long the CPU you have is good enough for the GPU you run there is no need to bother with changing it.

yea got some really bad stutters in val and r6 which aren't too strainful games. val i think is running of cpu more than gpu.

Schnitzel's right, unless you're doing rendering work or working on massive 16-bit Uncompressed TIFF's with 200 layers in Photoshop, nobody needs 64GB of RAM for anything.

 

That being said, I've seen Far Cry 5 use 17GB, and Flight Sim 2020 use 23GB of it... So 32GB isn't off the table if it's for gaming.

I mean what is your primary use case? You can add more memory if you need it, you can't ad more CPU...

 

16GB is becoming pretty easy to use up even for certain games though, so you could go for 2x8gb and add more if needed, or 2x16GB and you likely would never need to add more again (assuming gaming is the primary use for this PC).

Valorant is a complete joke of a game graphics wise and runs on iGPUs maxed out because it's mostly 2D. Upgrading your hardware will not fix your stutters. It sounds like a software problem. Just reinstall Windows and install Valorant on a clean OS and they will be gone.

Yes and no, it really depends on his display. If he uses a 1080p60hz one, then yeah, 3080 is overkill, but if he's using 1440p100+hz display, even a 3080 will have some issues running the most recent titles at high framerates.
