If my life depended on it, and I could hand-pick the person that saves it, I would MUCH rather that person learn their medical craft from the hospital. As a private company, hospitals have a vested interest in hiring people that don't suck, and they would lose basically everything if their employees were knocking patients off on the regular. A person who signs up for medical coursework directly at a teaching hospital start with the basics, and eventually work their way up to more critical roles. And they do this with none of the baggage that comes with the legacy system - no random Underwater Basket-weaving electives. No Afro-lesbian dance theory. And no Critical race theory that makes that person more likely to hate me based on the color of my skin... I'd WAY rather a person have none of that if my life depends on it.

Implying that there is a change where such degrees did not exist before.  It’s a hard one to define.  There’s a rather famous story of a guy who made up a degree in “frisbee” and eventually would up in aeronautic engineering.  The key was his degree in “frisbee” was an undergrad degree. There are not a lot of openings for undergrad only qualifications.  Most of them are in “corporate America”.  This is because all a generic undergrad degree means is a person can read and write coherently and meet a deadline.  Sometimes this is enough for a job.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Hate to break it to you but that happens all the time. Physicians need to do a residency before they're licensed and part of that is them seeing and treating real patients.

Correct. I think we've gotten off topic. I hope the OP got what they were looking for from this thread and has some food for thought. I don't think going back and forth with other posters about hypothetical scenarios is going to yield fruit.

Probably because people are trying to claim you can do anything without a degree.

only go to university if you want a job that requires it, in a regulated industry like medicine and law. You should seek to get your foot in the door of a good company as priority over education. Go to night school only if a qualification will give you career advantage.

 

Edward Snowden started his IT career as a security guard. The government building he worked at gave him access to security related tickets that opened doors for him.

 

There was an oxford university graduate survey floating around the internet from 2011 that had some red pilling stats on employment success. I personally did get a job with my science degree but the working conditions made me sick. I had to leave and bounce around crappy jobs for a few years. Technically I am still bouncing around crappy jobs. I prob should have taken an apprenticeship with my father. I would have more money now if i did.

I just wanna throw my two cents in.

 

Boomers will always tell you "Go to school for what you're good at, it's easy money!" But this statement is untrue and misleading.

 

For example: If you're good at singing, you may enjoy singing karaoke every other week at the bar. But you may not enjoy sitting down at a conference table with a bunch of strange people telling you how they want you to express certain lyrics before entering the recording booth - where you will essentially live until everyone is happy with how it sounds. Which path do you choose in this situation? 

 

Just because you're good at something, doesn't mean you'll enjoy it. I thought I would enjoy just about anything to do with computers as my main job. After some experience in the field, I learned that I really freaking hated it. I hated dealing with people who think they know how to follow instructions and people who just can't, dealing with higher ups that don't consider other options or paths, along with tech companies that think they know how people want to use their devices. It was overall very frustrating for me to say the least. Long story short, I learned the hard way that while I enjoy technology, I only enjoy it as a hobby or a "side gig" rather than wanting to work in it everyday of my life.

 

So don't be afraid to change your major. I changed my major 5 times before I finally realized what it is I would enjoy doing every morning I wake up - flying planes. It took me quite a few years and a decent amount of money to learn that. But that's okay, because I still learned along the way. Any which way you look at it, it is not a waste of money or time. You did ultimately learn something in the end, and that's all that really matters. Some people figure this out before they even leave high school. Some people take even longer than me. Everyone learns at their own pace, so don't worry so much about what you're going to do for a living before finding out what you would actually enjoy doing every morning you have to be rudely awoken earlier than waking up for high school, by your alarm.

 

TL;DR Money doesn't buy happiness, it's the experience that grants it. Go to school for what you genuinely enjoy doing, rather than just going for what you're good at. You never work a day in your life if what you do is enjoyable/fun.

Anything STEM won't land you a great paying job. To get a job that pays well you don't simply walk in waving a piece of paper and get a job at 60K a year. You have to start at the bottom and put more work in to get to the higher paid positions, you can do the same at bloody McDonalds with 0 quals. Effort and competence gets you places not a piece of paper. I didn't finish my degree, looking to at some point, but I'm earning more than most of the people who did finish their degree in stem fields and I'm working in a STEM field.

I'm going to disagree with you. The idea of working your way up in a company doesn't exist anymore. An Amazon employee working in a warehouse is not going to be the CEO of Amazon by simply "putting in the work" and in 40 years time be the new CEO. Getting a degree makes you less of a liability to a company. That's the whole premise behind graduating and actually getting a degree. It shows that you actually know the material in that field and have demonstrated your understanding enough to get a bachelors of science from your university. It takes effort and skill to graduate and you can't be a lazy, especially in STEM fields, in order to graduate. Yes you need people skills and a strong work ethic to make it far but that solely alone is not enough.

Methodology

For determining your future I used Google to find a list of college majors. One of the first results was one created by act.org. I took this list, deleted the subheadings such as "Social Sciences & Law", and finally imported into an Excel document. See attached document. Using the numbered rows, I then used RANDOM.ORG's integer generator to generator a number between 1 and 294 inclusive. This was used to correspond to the line number of college major or occupational specialty in the spreadsheet.

 

Results

The number generated was 33. Referencing the document, this means "Library Science" was selected for your future career. Apparently, this is a real thing.

Library science was a job with a lot of prospects for a short time a few years ago.  Library science is sort of like analog data science.  It applies to digital data science though.  It’s about how to find out things from a mess of stored data, be it shelves of books or the internet or what have you.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.
