I'm not sure what you mean off limit zones. The only thing I can think of is getting around household purchase limits. From a business standpoint it's phenomenal. You can get a 200+% return on your investment in less than 24 hours. That's great business not terrible

The point is I guess that “release dates” for GPUs have apparently always been mostly bogus and this year is no different.  The scalping is apparently new, but the lack of availability and the extreme unrealistic  lowness of the claimed MSRP is not.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

I'm a little disgusted by how people are overreacting about this, especially in today's current state; there's a pandemic, and millions of people are likely to lose the houses over their heads. A luxury item like this isn't necessary. Unfortunate that you can't buy it? Sure. There's other things you can spend money on if you feel the need. Just wait a couple months, and there will be loads in stock.

 

Which brings me to my other thought. I wonder if this will be a one off thing. While these sites (the ones with bots for scalping etc) are huge in the sneaker community, the difference is that the sneakers are limited run. There's only so many to get. Thus, their value is significantly higher. Sony isn't going to stop making consoles. They're going to keep pumping them out, and as they do, the potential risk to the scalper multiplies. It's also not something that usually takes long to produce, except for right now because of COVID, so IMO this is going to be the first of two attempts we see at this. They might try again with the next release, to see if it plays out well for them again, but supply chains will be significantly stronger and their flip window greatly reduced.

 

Either way, scalpers exist. Little is going to change that. They'll tax those that are well off enough to simply pay the extra without a second thought, and those that are stupid enough to pay the inflated pricing even though they can't really afford it. If you wanted one of these items, just wait a few months and you'll get on at retail.

Unlikely. The chances that it was a single person are extremely low. The cost for a tax agency to go after someone who bought only a few consoles doesn't make financial sense, and they have much larger fish they should have their eyes set on.

In terms of necessities during a pandemic (which I believe is what you were referring to), it's necessary though.

I mean, I get it if you're talking about the bare facts of capitalistic vs not. But I think we can all agree there are lines that should exist. I don't believe that's the case here though; if you have people willing to pay more for a luxury good, then go at it. You don't need a PS to live, and it won't greatly diminish your quality of life if you don't have one.

There's quite a few factors as to why scalping is such an issue and supply is so low right now. Where there's low supply and high demand, this is to be expected, sadly. It's the same with virtually anything that isn't a necessity. Just look at the prices of any low production vehicle.

I find it odd that anyone would be in a hurry. I mean, chances are at most you'd lose $300 (in this scenario), and if you couldn't flip them in 2ish weeks, just return it to the retailer 🤷‍♂️ At this point I'd bet even if it were past the return window, they'd still take it back since they know they can resell it easily.
