cpu thermal paste remover

i have a question.....will 100% acetone work to remove thermal paste off my cpu?

I just generally use 99% Isopropyl alcohol with coffee filters.I have no idea if acetone would harm it or not.

i would personaly not use aceton, its a bit aggressive.

just buy some 96% cleaning alcohol, in a medical story.

i bought some arctic silver 5 thermal paste and it came with a kit that included a 2 step thermal paste remover.........would this "kit" work better than isopropanol or rubbing alcohol?

They would do the same purpose really.  To clean the old paste off! :)  Either way works. (I prefer my 99% isopropenyl :D)

Just towel and water from the tap. No need to get alcohol orsomething.

It's fine.

It works great as long as you follow the instructions. I used it on my CPU.

Perhaps distilled water, but I would imagine tap water would leave some residue behind (can't say if its enough to affect performance or not) people would still generally prefer isopropyl alcohol over distilled water because it dries much faster, I'd imagine.

Even if there's some paste left that you cant see with your eyes, it doesnt matter because thermal paste is meant to fill the stratches/holes (you always have this in metal) allowing to have 2 pieces of metal in this case to have better contact.

No point using distilled water though, will get conductive as well.

I have the same and it works incredibly well. Isopropyl alcohol is a nice replacement for those who can't get specialized components easily. If you have ArctiClean, I'd recommend using it.

Isopropyl Alcohol would be the least expensive, yet very effective method for cleaning the CPU from thermal paste.

In fact isopropyl alcohol is commonly used as a electronics cleaner as it is

- non conductive

- fast drying

- capable of removing materials such as oxidation, minor chemical leaks, soldering flux, etc.

It is actually a common electronics / PCB cleaning agent. Its abudantly available at where I work. (If the Navy / Military uses it for just that...I'm sure it's fine).

It's because Isopropanol is cheaper and comes in a larger quantity. I personally use the Articlean stuff and it works fine. Takes 2 tries (about 6 drops) with the white (1st) bottle, then 2 drops from blue bottle after and CPU and heatsink/waterblock is nice and shiny :D

I personaly bought cleaning alcohol, in a medical store, worked fine for me. :)

But if artic silver is included with some paste remover, it will probably also work fine.
