how to check files arent corrupted during copying?

i had a 2tb seagate full of games and movies, and crystal disc info reported it had bad sector for a few years, still working now

 

then i bought a new 4tb wd blue and copied everything to new drive

 

and the question as topic

If a file or folder is corrupted or inaccessible, Windows Explorer will likely stop copying and report that an unexpected error occurred.

Comparing it to the old drive.

 

Otherwise, hashing is often used to check data integrity, but that's not an option for you because it needs to be generated before the copying process.

If the files were corrupted by the old drive, there's no way to detect it other that reacquiring them and comparing them (but at that point, just overwrite and move along).

 

If you're worried about files corrupting during the copy process, you could use (among others, I imagine) TeraCopy. You can set it to be the default copy/paste handler, and to always verify after copying.

(I have a bit of experience in this area due to a RAM speed issue in my desktop coupled with moving around TBs of files; generally it's not a problem, but verification doesn't hurt; it will definitely save you hours of writing software to systematically compare multiple copies of TBs of files looking for errors...)

is it really that smart?

when i had incomplete downloaded movies, and i didnt know untill playback in the middle of it, skip those scene and its fine

 

all i d8d was to check total s8ze of files

If it's corrupt/inaccessible on a drive level, generally Explorer just hangs (so, no, it isn't). If the file had in-place corruption/incomplete before, Explorer doesn't know better. If the file has bad permissions or illegal characters, Explorer makes an error message.

It's not really "smart", it's just encountering a read error and throwing an unhandled exception. Since we're talking about bad sectors here, it is much more likely to encounter a read error on an impacted folder or file.

i dont recall any hang during normal copy, paste, or i just hit retry button

 

so is it possible no data is damaged even the disc is reported having bad sector?

( disk was really full, a few hundred mb free)

Yes, I've found that this is the case more often than not.

this is cool! is it noticeable slower than default copy tho? I'm often moving a lot a really small files, so it wouldn't be that much of an issue probably, just curious... 

 

Also does it have undo copy etc as well? 

I'd really almost like it for the 'play a sound' option, windows is so bad about giving any meaningful feedback, a sound would help a lot already...

Supposedly it's faster, but I've not done any A/B testing to confirm that. At minimum, I haven't noticed any slowdowns for copying (verifying afterwards will take longer because it reads the copied file back again).

hmm, I see. Well it's super important to me to be able to undo copy / delete / rename... I do a lot of mods for games and stuff (even some windows "modifications" and especially delete and rename get mixed up often (if you're renaming hundreds of files, it's important being able to just undo the last step specifically, especially if you copy over a file wrongly there's no way to bring it back other than simply undo the copy process) so yeah

well duh.. if you enable the option, its gonna take twice as much time, meaning, it will copy and then again take the same amount of time to verify the file, so if takes an hour to copy something, expect 2 hours for the same deed with verify on.
