is an old 7700 or 7700k a reasonable upgrade to a 7350k? And what should i do if the market for a used processor is limited?

Drago_XL

I have a 7350k with a coolsermaster hyper 212 evo, and it would be really practical if i could upgrade my quite bad cpu while not making motherboard and cooler obselete. I have looked a little bit, and 7700 can cost a lot in sweden, so i need to have a back up plan if i dont find one for reasonable. Thankful for any help!

You may buy in other country, but it still will be expensive. For example here in Poland prices for 7700k starts from 1000 PLN (about 2300 kr) which has no sense when you can buy new better processor with motherboard for similar price.

My advice is - use it until you'll really must upgrade, then buy motherboard + cpu. I hope you have DDR4 motherboard.

BTW. Your CPU is not that bad imo. Overclock it and should work good enough.

Thanks, i overclocked it a little bit just now and on boot it already feels faster, i might wait a bit until i upgrade!

While 7700(k) is top end CPU for that socket, don't forget there's also 6700(k) too, so that can open up the options a bit.

Can confirm, my 6700k has worked well enough for the last 5 years, but I'm still getting ready to upgrade to Zen 3

i just sold my 7700k for £200 in the UK, the used market is very high for these chips.

I would wait until you can get a mobo/CPU upgrade

I just want to throw in old xeon CPUs. They are normally cheaper than their i7 counterparts and still compatible with the desktop mainbaords (at least the E3-series).

You can search for E3 v6 (Kaby lake) or E3 v5 (Skylake) series CPUs. An exhaustive list of which CPUs are supported can be found on your mainbaord manufaturers website.

I personally upgraded my i5-4690k to an E3-1230v3, as it was only half the price of an i7.

But please keep in mind that xeons are not overclockable (at least not the E3-series from what I know) and do not bring an iGPU (So you will need to have a dedicated GPU installed)

Have you considered ebay?

CPUs are excellented used buys because they don´t degrade or break easily.

I myself bought a 7700k used on ebay for ~220 € a year ago and sold my 6600k for it. The difference in total was 110 €. I would not pay much more considering the low AMD Ryzen prices.

7700k is still good for gaming, especially delided and overclocked to 5 Ghz. It is also easy to do with a vice or a special tool for a few bucks
