I’m getting the 5600x and I have a 3070 FE and was wondering if I should get a X570 or B550 motherboard.

biggest difference "one feature that will make heads turn is the VRM design on the B550. The new motherboards have extremely good VRMs which pretty much outperform their X570 counterpart."

X570 have PCIE gen 4 NVME support while B550 seems to be PCIE gen 3 for NVME but that performance difference has yet to be shown on gaming systems (even sata and NVME are a minor difference in load times) 

 

B550 is normally cheaper by 10-20% compared to similar x570 boards at normal prices. 

The best gaming PC is the PC you like to game on, how you like to game on it

Do you need the extra io of a x570 board?

 

Whats the rest of the build?

 

For a normal gaming pc, a b550 board is fine, x570 is only really needed if you need multiple pcie gen 4 ssds or other io devices.

Ryzen CPUs have dedicated lanes for one NVMe drive so a 5000 series CPU would still offer 4.0 NVMe support

How many watts do I need? ATX 3.0 & PCIe 5.0 spec, PSU misconceptions, protections explained, group reg is bad

I have 3070 fe phanteks eclipse 970 evo 500mb seagate barracuda 2tb 32gb crucial balistix 3200mhz still deciding on psu and getting 5600x tomorrow

then b550 will be plenty.

 

Get a midrange b550 and and you will be fine.

even a cheap b550 like the msi b550m pro-vdh wifi would be more than capable, and that's just 110 bucks iirc. the asrock b550m pro4 has been on sale for 90 bucks recently, and if it's anything like its b450m sibling it should be a great board as well. aside from aesthetic, brand preferences, and maybe different i/o features or something, 100-150 dollar boards would be perfect from a price-to-performance standpoint without sacrificing meaningful vrm quality or anything like that.

Case: Fractal Design Meshify C Dark (to be replaced with a good case shortly)

basically everything was bought used off of reddit or here, only new component was the case. absolutely nutty deals for some of these parts, ill have to tally it all up once it's "done" :D

X570 if you like to have more features (such as many USB 3.2 Gen 2 and PCIe Gen 4 x1), B550 if you don't care or the existing IO suits your needs.

Main difference between them is that on B550, the lanes that are wired to the cpu are gen 4, but the lanes that are wired to the chipset are gen 3, on X570, the lanes that are wired to the chipset and to the cpu (assuming it's zen 2/3) are gen 4, so unless you need the extra gen 4 lanes, B550 is just as good.

To name some boards, or the b550 strix f or the b550 tomahawk if they fit in your budget. All of these boards are good.
