Do these headphones need an amp?

mattdmg

I wanted to get a pair of Sennheiser HD6XX but I don't know if I need an external amp to make them sound good. If I need one what are some good options for under $100?

Yes an amp is pretty much required to drive them optimally. Most amps that are reccomended for it is a $100 or more. They scale well with high end amps and tubes. For time I would get at least a monoprice liquid spark, JD's labs atom , schiit magni 3+, or schiit heresy. Depending on the music you listen to or your use case these headphones may not even be right for you.

Is it dumb to buy these for gaming? I don't really listen to a whole lot of music. If I was getting them mainly for gaming would I be fine with the onboard jack?

Rice guru has been saying that the HD58X's are more precise for gaming. And that the HD6XX's are less precise. You could drive the HD58X's off your mobo. But what mobo do you have?

So you'd recommend the 58x with a cheaper amp? one of the ones you listed?

Because I am willing to buy an amp if its recommended

You can drive the HD58X's off your mobo amp. It is good enough. For now.
