Can there be an *option* to not have quotes collapse?

Mark Kaine
Go to solution Solved by colonel_mortis,

Options are very hard to implement, especially for the behaviour of other members' posts like this. Sorry, this isn't going to happen.

Especially on mobile it's very tedious to see quotes now, it's just an  unnecessary extra step to click on expand, which can get confusing, and tedious fast. Personally I like all information layed out to me so I can choose what I want to focus on, which is now nearly impossible - since the information is literally hidden.

Option to have quotes fully shown instead of collapsed would be much appreciated therfore.

Thanks for the consideration, hopefully it would be easy to implement.

I find it condenses everything quite nicely so I do enjoy that and collapsed should be the default, but I agree the more options for users the better.

Yeah, well but I'm not clicking on every expand button on every page, so I'm missing a lot of information currently.

And yes I don't see why it couldn't be an option to have them expanded by default instead.

Kinda a problem that very few users would find as it's not very difficult.

It is difficult tho, I tried doing it... It just takes a long time and you have to scroll up and down a lot too...

I never understood why people want it collapsed, now I know why...

Think it's mostly an issue for mobile, it's super easy to scroll past "collspsed" content, especially due to the enormous spacing between posts also. I can see it being easier on a big monitor as you have a better overview there.

Anyhow I hope it wouldn't be to hard to have that option, because I don't like missing out info, which I definitely will the way it is now.

I agree. Especially on mobile, I like the condensed quotes b/c it was annoying when I had to scroll for ages to get to the one line reply to someone who posted a essay.

I could use some help with this!

please, pm me if you would like to contribute to my gpu bios database (includes overclocking bios, stock bios, and upgrades to gpus via modding)

I welcomed the collapse quotes, because people sometimes unnecessarily quoting  a long post from OP even on the first reply which is stupid, making me scrolling like hell.

So you just don't care that you're missing out on a lot of content, because you read it already? (which you likely didn't)

And also options are bad apparently. 👀

Yeah, precisely.
Personally i only quote the point that i want to answer. Like right now.

Plus you can make use of the "jump to post" to see the original post even if you snip out all the text.

But if it's a long thread you will *not* have read it already, unless you really read every thread from start to end (doubtful)

Me too sometimes where applicable, though I don't see the relevancy of having to go through every page *before* I read it to make all quotes expand, so I can actually see what's been said. 🤷🏼

Is there a particular reason you're using this particular software? It seems highly inflexible, to me, as a user.

Partly we have invested quite a bit of custom development into it, and partly because it is on the whole very good, even there are things that make me bang my head against the wall sometimes. I think a setting like that would be reasonably hard to add in most forum softwares though.

I see, it's just I've noticed similar behavior of forum software before on other forums, with lots of issues that somehow never got fixed... For example using quotes on mobile is messed up currently, or the "draft" feature is also not working correctly (the thing where it just puts your previous post instead of the actual quote or text it *should* display)

Or the thing with the message pop ups that aren't coherent, etc, these were all issues before the forum update already btw, well I'm not sure what I'm trying to say but I hope most of these issues can be fixed over time of course.

The correct solution to this problem is to perusade people to stop being idiots and quoting the OP, and to autoremove images in quotes like every single other f*cking forum software on the planet does.

Then, we could go back to having the quotes fully expanded and it wouldn't be a problem anymore.

Thanks for reading all this by the way!

By the way, my desktop is a docked laptop. Get over it, No seriously, I have an exterrnal monitor, keyboard, mouse, headset, ethernet and cooling fans all connected. Using it feels no different to a desktop, it works for several hours if the power goes out, and disconnecting just a few cables gives me something I can take on the go. There's enough power for all games I play and it even copes with basic (and some not-so-basic) video editing. Give it a go - you might just love it.
