Your local ethernet isn't your internet speed. It's totally different. Gigabit ethernet means you have 1 Gbps maximum of transfer speed to your local device, or indeed if you paid for that speed (which usually pretty darn expensive).

Yes that is gigabit (= 1000 Mbps) upload but not download.

It is the first time that I see an upload speed 4x the download speed. It is usually the other way around or equal. The cause might haven been somebody at home downloading something at the time.

I was recently looking at locally available gigabit fiber packages, and noticed one ISP offering a package where you have a "speed toggle", which you can use to choose 1000/300, 500/500 or 300/1000. It seems rather weird to offer that kind of option, but it might not be completely out of the realm of possibility that someone (OP) could have it set that way if they have a similar thing.

I'd imagine it would be extremely useful for people using cloud backups or YouTube creators.  Upload is more important than most give it credit for, its just only useful in relatively short bursts compared to download that you're more likely to consistently benefit from the faster speed.

That looks like WiFi vs Ethernet to me. You plugged an ehternet cable to the laptop, but are you sure it is not still using WiFi?

Sure, I get that, it's just why would you artificially limit the connection like that when you can switch it to faster upload or download at will? Just let it run at 1000/1000 since that's what you're paying for anyways, now there's just a pointless extra step there for absolutely nothing.

True, it does seem rather bizarre as surely if its that easy to switch then they have to provision the network to handle Gigabit anyway.  They're just making it more complicated for no obvious reason.

The way I read it is you aren't paying for 1000/1000. You are paying for one of the three listed option. 1000/300, 500/500 or 300/1000. It's just a way for the isp to offer more tiers.

True in a way, but since you can switch it when you want without any limitations on that in order to get whatever speed you want when you need it, you are effectively paying for 1000 both ways.
