Very slow downloads suddenly on Steam

Jimkirk363

Im a Steam user with a 500mb cable connection capable of hitting 72mb/s.

Now on steam i know im not gonna get anywhere near that but suddenly im only getting 9-13mb/s and its causing stuttering in games.

Ive changed my server from UK Manchester to UKLondon to see if this helps but didnt.

Usually i get above 20mb.

You’re downloading not streaming.  So this would be game stutter while the thing is downloading in the background?

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Pretty sure steam downloads are not always the same? Possibly wrong but some games get downloaded faster than others because of the server.

hit up steam support or the internet, they might have the answer. or just restart your wifi and pc, that might be a simple solution.

phone out of service?

And Games/Steam downloads Decompression of Downloaded files has been heavier in recent years on our CPUs and Mem Bandwidth and Disk Usage.

Decompression is more multicore aware, shouldnt be running games while its doing BusyWork.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

This sunday hit me a slow download too. Maybe while under maintenance they have less bandwith so we feel slow download speed. I usually download at 74mb/s too but I was downloading at 2-10mb/s, and I have a steam server very near from where I live.

Steam is maxing my connection out completely usually, around 10mb/s, but of course it's possible there's a cap... CDNS cost money.

There may be issues but that's unlikely the cause... 1mb up/down is generally enough for online play, unless there are large downloads during gameplay, like levels and such but generally those are stored client side.

It's possible there's a network issue, on your end or steams, but those dl speeds alone shouldn't (can't) cause  these issues.

Did you do a network test, what's the ping, packet loss, jitter, speeds...?

Learned this the hard way on ps3... Never dl something while playing a game... It'll be slow as heck and probably end up being corrupted...

I also don't alt tab (unless absolutely necessary) or have other windows open or "steam chat" while gaming (the overlay is completely off)

Every little shit can cause issues, and some games outright crash or disconnect when alt tabbing especially...

To me a computer is not a multi purpose device, that's what I got my phone for, I don't play on that so it's not too bad if it's lagging or crashing...

That's also why I removed the update service in windows, that just loves to do busy work while you're trying to play a game. 🚮
