RTX 3080 20GB

Go to solution Solved by GoodBytes,

Yes. It is a known rumor that appeared before the 3080 was even released, this was reinforced by the fact that:

  • The 3080 only has 10GB of memory, while the 2080 Ti had 12GB
  • Once the card was released the PCB of the 3080, including the Founder Edition has 2 empty memory slots which means that a different memory configuration was designed since day 1. Normally, you never see this on a higher end card.

It is believed that Nvidia is probably holding the 20GB version as a potential reply to AMD, depending on their GPU performance and what consumer demands. If they feel there is no rush, then maybe 1 year from now they'll release a Ti version of it, that is a bit faster and 20GB of memory. If they feel the pressure from AMD, you may see the 20GB model early 2021.

Hey guys, has anyone heard the rumours around the RTX 3080 20GB? Word is they're slated for release around December.

doubt they'll cover rumors

at most, probably the WAN show

but i don't see a point of this, not like we can get it even if we know it exists/launch date

just like anything else, wait for launch and benchmarks

knowing it exists wont suddenly turn 3080 10gb card into un-usable junks either, it just means more options are available.

rumours of it appeared pretty much as soon as we know the current 3080 only has 10G VRAM. Even proposed its launch to be some time after Big Navi's. Honestly if they think this is worth going over, they would have.

i'd rather hear about a product that i can actually get my hands on, than speculations and what not, unless it's confirmed facts (which seldom happens unless nvidia themselves released info)

hyping is unhealthy, and pointless.

tbh the average gamer doesnt need this even if it was at a reasonable price for the spec. its kinda like a post i saw a while ago where this kid wanted to put threadripper in epyc. useless and a waste of money if you cant take advantage of it.

fair - it'll be interesting how much stock of the next batch of 3080's appear, what with the rumours of nvidia holding back stock deliberately and all that.

That would be wild for them to come out with a variant so quickly. With the way people are going nuts for the cards now, if I were an early adopter I would be filled with nothing but rage if this turns out to be true. Jensen and myself would be throwing hands.

it's a very solid rumor at this point, but it's gonna launch at 900usd, the 10gb is still a better deal since it's the same amount of cuda cores, unless you can REALLY use the extra vram.

You're missing the point completely. This isn't like the Super cards or something that came out down the line. We're talking less than 3 months if the rumors of December are true. That's 100% absurd. But as the above poster stated, that's nothing new with Nvidia apparently, lol.

I keep seeing this argument made, while the 3080 isn't the successor for the 2080 TI but rather the 2080 which had 8GB's of VRAM.

I do suspect a "3080 TI" like card will have more than 12GB's of VRAM.

However such a card shouldn't outperform the 3090, and the 3090 is only marginally better than the 3080 with much more VRAM.

In the end the question would be, if the 3090 is only marginally better than the 3080 but due to it having 24GB's of VRAM it costs more than double in MSRP

How much would they charge for 20GB's of VRAM?

I honestly doubt they will kill their 3090 months after it releases, so I do expect a potential 20GB version to be 1000$ or higher.

At that price range one can start asking the question, is such a price worth it?

At 4K most likely, but at 2K or even 2,5K it's not likely we will pass beyond 10GB's of VRAM before you can replace the 3080 with something better at which point the money saved would go well into a new card.

We have seen higher VRAM version of cards before, and by the time it was relevant to 90% of the consumers the cards had some years on them.

From all the testing I've done you will likely need to do one of the following to have issues with 10GB.

Run 4k AND a) "next gen" settings in some games or b) custom texture packs

Although some really high end extreme texture packs will make it an issue at lower resolutions as well.  The good part is most of the settings that push you over are likely indiscernible from dropping textures to Ultra or high.  For instance 4k Doom Eternal needs about 9GB on "nightmare" but its less than 8GB on "Ultra".
