4K Monitor - 60Hz or 144?

Mondas42

Morning

I’m thinking of treating myself to a 4K monitor to compliment my 3080 Strix (when I get it!!). I’m torn between a ASUs TUF 28inch 60Hz model for about £360 or the much more expensive ASUS Strix 27inch 144hz one which is about £800. I’m a casual gamer but like good graphics etc. Would I be ok with the 60Hz model or would I be better off saving up for the more expensive one? Would I really see the difference do you reckon?

thanks,

Martin

60hz isn't even good gaming experience, you are better off saving up for the 144hz, or even a 120hz

Why not go for the middle ground with a 144hz 1440p 27"?

Imo that's a perfectly fine resolution for the size.

Gaming on 60hz is so much worse than 100hz+.

I think 1440p 144hz is the sweet spot for price and performance.

Does the monitor have to be 4k?

I wouldn't go for that asus 4k144hz. There is an lg 4k144hz monitor that is I think 700 USD. That may be worth taking a look at. Other than that I wouldn't look at current 4k144 monitors since they're due for a replacement soon. As other people have said take a look at some 1440p 144 or 240hz options

Going 4K on a 27" monitor for gaming doesn't make sense imo. I'd rather go with 1440p and take the much better FPS than with 4K.

If someone did not use reason to reach their conclusion in the first place, you cannot use reason to convince them otherwise.

Soooo you can actually get 144hz in virtually any game at full details which is.... Bad?

you would really see the difference, the question is: if you're a casual gamer, do you want to double the budget for that?

i wouldnt say gaming is as much of a problem as the rest of the things you'll be doing on the machine.

display scaling is still arse with some programs, and 4k on 27" is too small if you're not putting your display RIGHT in front of your nose. i'd say for most people 1440p on a 27" is ideal for a "healthy" distance. dropping down to 1440p also puts you in a more affordable price bracket.

i'll put it like this: for the price of the 4k144Hz panel, you could get a 1440p 144Hz panel (whatever first hit i found on google), and a new set of nice 'gaming' peripherals.

And enjoy your gpu longer before having to drop the settings

Don't get anything lower than 120Hz it's just so bad. Even when buying cheapest new monitor for a new PC.

The LG mentioned above is the LG 27gn950, which hardware unboxed are trying to review soon. It looks good on paper, but has had availablity issues since it was released roughly April time.

If you can wait till after Christmas, alot of people have been mentioning we should see alot more 4k 144hz monitors coming out by then.

  • 3 weeks later...

Decided not to bother with 4K as I’m gaming at a desk and also use the computer for other stuff such as writing. So I went for a 240hz 1440p monitor instead.
