Software you really wish was multithreaded?

Most of us have multi core CPUs now, many of us would probably buy 6+ cores on a machine if software used it, but it rarely does.

 

Beyond games are there any areas of software you really wished had been rewritten to be multi threaded or used modern GPU resources so that they performed substantially better but currently they don't don't perform well?

In order for you to benefit from multithreaded software it has to be something that currently takes some appreciable amount of time to do. It could just be an application without it is a bit sluggish but I am struggling to see obvious things today which would really be helped by it.

 

One example I have is audio compression via mp3 or flac and such. These all seem to be single threaded today, but that may be out of necessity. Most video encoding uses a lot of cores happily and compression also tends to use multithreading as well. Beyond that I don't think there is much that most people use software wise they wait on with todays computers.

 

Its not like you care about multithreaded spreadsheets but I am keen to learn what we think is still too slow.

Well chrome makes for a reason a new process each time you open a new tab so they can be indepedant of eachother and organized better by the os e.g. tab1 runs on core#0/1/2/3 and tab2 apparently is running on #core4/5/6/7.

GEMS, the modeling software I used at work. When trying to render 20k of vector segments with 1/4 cores and it takes almost 1h. Not the way I want to spend better part of day.
