also to answer your questions discs are massively lower cost than solid state memory

What emosun said, DVDs and even Blurays for that matter now are relatively cheap to produce. USB drives on the other hand are a bit costlier. And for something that you're only demanding a lot of performance from during installation, it doesn't make much sense to spend that much money on the install media.

That being said you can buy Windows install USBs and DVDs I believe. Not sure if there's a price difference between the two there. Couldn't find a reliable source to compare.

I would guess that some day flash storage would get cheap enough to distribute games on, then we won't have a need for discs anymore, it would be fun to go back to cartridge style game inserts

since flash storage is re-writable imagine if developers could push game updates to it and update the installation so if you do need to play the game again later on you won't need to use the internet to download the updates or you could directly run the game off of the flash storage

Well, that's because a USB flash drive is costly, because they need a controller built into it to communicate with the USB host (your computer) and the flash chip.

 

DVD and Blu-ray on the other hand doesn't need a controller as the drive already has the controller. The disc only holds data unto it.

 

I'm thinking of some sort of cartridge card (such as Nintendo Switch cartridge) are more viable. The cartridge doesn't need a controller to communicate with the host, as all communication is handled by the drive itself.

The last Game i had on CD was like 15 Years ago. I dont even have an Optical Drive in my Gaming PC for Years now.
