Would like pc for Gaming/schoolwork

Budget (including currency): 1200-1300 USD

Country: USA

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Basic gaming/schoolwork/programming (java, python, nothing super demanding for now). For gaming, most likely rdr2, COD, Rainbow 6, minecraft, eve, Oxygen not included.

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): 

Currently I have been using a laptop for everything (including gaming), and having found myself a good job, I have acquired some cash to put towards a PC, as my laptop cant even get a smooth 30 fps on most games released within the last 5 years. I've been working on a parts list for my first build going into senior year of high school. I need something that can be used for gaming as well as schoolwork. For this PC, I believe that I just need to determine my power supply, but any suggestions are very welcome.

I am completely fine with any sort of comments, criticisms, help, or any other way I can learn more about building a PC. I just need information.

overkill af but nice build. i'm not sure if 2600 can go on x570, going x470 will ensure compatibility and save you a buck or two. also, why 1.5 tb storage?

I was planning for OS and such on 512 gb (Plenty of extra space just in case reasons i guess) and then 1 tb for games/schoolwork/other files. What would you recommend for storage? Also, thanks for the tip on the motherboard I'll probably change that up.

no reason for 1tb m.2 i recommend 1tb 2.5 inch sata drive (ssd). for mobo i recommend gigabyte x470 aorus gaming 5 wifi, just a good board in general. you can use the money you saved to invest in the 2600x, for overclocking, and a different cooler than the box one.

Any specific model for the 1tb ssd? Also it looks like the x470 aorus gaming 5 wifi is triple the price of my current solution. Am I looking at the wrong board?

I'd go for a 1tb sata ssd instead of the second 1tb nvme. Something like the mx500 should be $100. Use that money saved for  a 3600. I wouldn't recommend buying a new 2060 right now. Either buy a used gpu or wait a few months for 3060 or amd equivalent.

Love the MB and SSD. My current ram sticks are DDR4 3600 and the MB doesn't mention that under memory speed. Should I look for a different set of RAM sticks?

should be out somewhere in october but no solid date yet. it'll be $100 more but should perform much better than the 5700XT and 2070 super.

Don't buy anything right now. There's too much on the very close horizon to justify anything in this list.

 

Everything in the list would have been good for about a year or two ago, but as of now it's just overpriced and under powered for the total.

Would this make my build completely obsolete? I'm really only going to be using this for casual gaming, so I don't really think I need the fanciest parts, but are there any that I should be looking at?

just dont stand on carpet

work on wooden table, stand on bare ground with bare feet and you should be good for static

 

as for tools, a standard sized phillip screw driver and maybe scissors/blade to open packaging.

 

and as slottr said, if you're not in a rush, delay your build for ~1-2 months, new stuffs are coming out

I'm not in too much of a rush, but I will be using this for school, as I plan that we will be going remote within 2 weeks because there was a student that has been in direct contact with at least 100 other students. I would likely want to start work in around a month to a month and a half.

You're spending way too much on everything cumulatively. New Nvidia cards are coming out that will make this current generation redundant (also the fact they're not being produced). And AMD is announcing new chips soon

 

If you REALLY need/want a system now: do something like this

So I see that NVIDIA and AMD are coming out with some really cool new cards, but from what I've seen on the price point it would put me about 1 to 2 hundred dollars overbudget. I also am only going to really be using this for casual gaming, school work, and some computer science stuff (mostly programming), so I don't think I need a super upgraded computer. Thanks for the list though, I will likely take a few parts from it. Should I be seeing price drops once those new chips are released?

I really want to learn more about planning computers, so I feel like walking through how I can either fix it or go about creating a better list. I want to know my system and why all the parts were chosen so that I can upgrade it in the future.

You picked an older 2600 when the newer and better 3600 costed only a bit more.

The motherboard you picked has worse VRMs than some B450 boards.

Too much spending on the storage drive, you could have easily put that on a better GPU instead.

I do like the list, But i would likely want a 500 Gb SSD to store windows and bios (just to give room to expand) then a HHD for games and schoolwork files. Any parts you would reccomend?

For sure. I'll break it down one for one and explain why

 

CPU: 2600 is on a weaker architecture, and compared to the 3600 its just not worth saving a few bucks over- especially at the budget you're at

 

Motherboard: X470 is a weird choice right now, just due to the fact that it doesn't support PCIe 4, but has other features which any consumer wouldnt ever use compared to B450 or B550

 

Ram: Faster, but still with lower latency (C16)- Ryzen 3xxx chips benefit from fast, dual channel memory

 

Storage: Changed to all SSD. It's not very expensive to go this route, and then theres no fiddling around with a separate boot drive.

 

GPU: 5700 XT is faster than the 2060, and cheaper than the 2070S

 

Case will have more airflow

 

Cheaper, but still good power supply
