Can we have glossy panels?

Is nobody annoyed at the fact there are like zero good high reso high refresh rate glossy panels on the market? When they have superior image quality.

Everybody knows that pc graphics are superior to consoles, it's like a universal truth at this point. But are they really in the real world given that most pc gamers are playing on matte panel while most console players are playing on a TV with way better image quality and a glossy panel to top that off. I really wish LMG(Linus media group) do a video on where they have comparable glossy panel vs matte and cover what system is it running on and ask people which one looks better, they can even do that with 4k matte vs 1080p glossy as pc gamers don't realize resolution that isn't everything when it comes to image quality. LMG can literally shake up the entire monitor industry by doing this kind of video.

 

I'm just really bummed that there are no options, i'm not saying glossy panels are superior in every way and I know some people would prefer matte but why cannot we just have better options? Currently i'm an owner of xb271hu with no upgrade path to a glossy panel in sight. And I hope that changes in the future.

Not sure how old you are, but at 47... I've been battling glossy vs matte in the TV world for years.  Trying to place a TV in a living room and not have glare obscure the image is a nightmare.

 

I'm 100% happy with a matte monitor.  Not like you can mount them above and angle down easily to avoid glare.  They're kind of stationary and if you have a light room with windows... screw that.

 

Matte > glossy.

Get a CX OLED 48". This is the best currently possible image quality combined with a glossy screen. It's just a tad expensive for most people as a monitor

My solution is watching movies and series without ambient light. Makes the experience better anyway.

Do you only watch at night, or with blackout curtains?

 

Watching football on Saturday and Sunday... I am not going to make my living room a cave.

Hopefully never, glossy is horrible, I hate my phone that has glass already. I have one glossy monitor to my matte ones, it's so bad. The image quality will really be more to do with OLED and HDR though.

I mostly watch in the evening or at night, otherwise i use curtains. But i don't watch sports. Pretty much only movies, series and gaming is done on my TV.

If you take 2 exact same displays, one glossy and one matte, the glossy one will look sharper. But everything has it's usecase. Glossy is better fitted for TVs and matte is better for Monitors overall. But TBH the display finish is one of the least impactfull things about image quality. If there is a nice display under the glossy or matte finish, it will look good either way.

 

Also if reflections are a problem during the day, just turn up the brightness.

That's a very toxic mentality to have, just because you don't like them, nobody should have the option to like them either

A lot of newer displays kind of meet in the middle.  The display is glossy but has an anti-glare coating that disperses glare without noticeably reducing the image quality.  This way, you get the best of both worlds.  Here at my work desk, I have a Samsung in the middle that's like this, and the difference between the heavy matte finished AOC and LG monitors on either side is like night and day.

 

The high-gloss finishes are basically gone from most at this point, but the anti-glare coated displays usually look just as clear and sharp.  Heavy matte finishes tend to have a sort of foggy look with a light shining on them, so I do understand why they're not desirable in a lot of cases.

I'm sure there are *some* people out there who are annoyed by it, but I am willing to bet that that market's pretty small, to the point of it not even being worth it to add another SKU for most manufacturers, let alone to develop another process they're happy with.

 

That's not to say that they're not working on improving image quality though. Screens have gotten WAY better in terms of both clarity and glare rejection.

It wouldn't look sharper, if you'd take exactly same two good monitors with one matte other glossy, the glossy one could look it's more directly watching pixels and have like no film over it, but in general it's just worse due to so much reflection. On TVs it's whatever I guess, for monitor I'd need to have a dim room always, no window reflection at all to even be able to look at the actual content on the display not the reflections. So yeah exactly, least impactful thing about image quality really, proper good display is where it's at.

Toxic mentality? Are you serious? You don't know what being toxic means then. All I'm stating are facts, reason why most are matte monitors. You may like it on TV which is ok for it, you're watching content on TV and usually can dim a room too. Monitor is completely different use. Having to be in the dark just so you don't see the reflection from a monitor, yeah just no. Like I said, proper display is what will matter really, not the finish.

With noting that one monitor with matte display might have quite a bit different matte finish than another one do in some cases.

As a previous iMac owner who transitioned to windows machines a couple of yours ago I totally agree with you, nothings beats a glossy display. It's really annoying that no major companies are exploring that market (which I'm sure there's a huge demand in) other than apple but no way in hell am I paying 5000 dollars for a monitor (pro display XDR if you're interested lol). Your best option would be to look at touch screen monitors since they always have glossy displays but if you're looking for 240hz 1ms response time with G-Sync you're out of luck. Maybe one day Microsoft will sell a monitor (like the one used in the surface studio 2) for a reasonable price but even if that happens it probably wouldn't be targeted for gamers and ergo wouldn't have those flashy specs (but tbh I'd take it over an acer predator any day of the week since I don't really play competitive games and I'd rather have the more vibrant colors for single player games).
