Dark Rock Pro 4 blocks my top PCIe slot - should I grind it down?

grinding it would probably make it hella ugly

it's a shame, really

I built a new computer last night but realized my Dark Rock Pro 4 cooler overlaps the motherboard's (X570 Godlike) top PCIe slot ever so slightly, but enough that it bends any card in that slot downwards, which I demonstrated with an old 1060 I pulled out of a prebuilt. I really don't want to have to swap out the cooler. Given that I intend to upgrade to an RTX 3080, which has a backplate, what should I do?

20200912_083717.thumb.jpg.0454a79dc8345cfaa6426ab2c773da15.jpg

Due to the mounting bracket style, I can't rotate it 90 degrees or any way that would decrease the amount of overlap. It sounds nuts, but what if I ground down the fins? I can do it without hitting any heat pipes, and I don't really care that much about the cosmetics of the build (especially since it'll be covered by a graphics card).

Of course, there's also the possibility of just using the next slot down, which I'm doing with the 1060, but I'm not sure if that'll work with a more powerful card like the 3080. The top slot is the only 16x slot on the board, with the other slots being x4's and x8's. How much of a performance hit should I expect from that?

can I borrow your second picture? wanna see how msi reps in taiwan respond to this

but this could indeed happen, NH-D15 for example mentions that it cant fit boards with PCIe slot at the very top position

Since you seem to have a PCIe 4 system if your board can do x8 straight to CPU in another slot it'll be just fine.

You can do what you wish, but I would recommend just using the PCIe x8 slot.

Based on what I'm reading about this motherboard, the second slot is only x4. @ChipioIndustries, can you confirm this?

Better to return it and get something that fits better.

Either run your 3080 in the x8 slot (it'll work just fine), or return the DRP4 and get something less bulky, like an NH-U12A or NH-U12S chromax.black (or an AIO).

Grinding that heatsink = yuck

Holy moly, you scared me for a second there.

The MSi X570 Godlike has a total of 4x PCI-E X16 slots....last very bottom (4th slot) being PCI-E 4.0 X4 from the chipset.

It breaks down the CPU's as such (possible configurations)

Excluding the bottom 4th slot, since it's coming from the X570 chipset.

  1.  16x -- 0x -- 0x
  2. 8x -- 0x -- 8x
  3. 8x -- 4x -- 4x

@ChipioIndustries you want to use the THIRD slot from the top.

A reply I've got. They asked if the heatsink is upside down (so you should rotate it by 180 degrees), I think the cover on the top could be removed and turned around as well?

Pretty sure I remember a review that said the plate was indeed upside down.

Yeah, that's what I was suggesting lol.

So yeah, use the third slot or change the cooler issue. Basically I'm avoiding the issue of "My graphics card is not performing the way it should" when you upgrade to the next gen cards since the second slot is limited to x4.

Hi!

I was middle of my PC build preparation and I saw that post. I was worried a lot, but I was trusting more manufacturer information:

1. Go check on Be Quiet site cooler compatibility. https://www.bequiet.com/en/motherboardcheck

Conclusion: it fits

2. You must install that cooler very very accurately. I my my solution the cooler touches gently to the GPU backplate (be aware that CPU is fully covered with heat plate). Also I discover that heat is transferring GPU backplate to CPU cooler. Its not problem in my build.

Solution: it fits

Hardware:

MSI MEG X570 Godlike

Ryzen 5950X

DDR4 3600 MHz 64GB

2x MSI 3090 Ventus OC + NVlink

3 NVMe drives, 1 SSD and 1 HDD. Total 16TB

Bequiet 900 rev2 case

Corsair 1600i PSU

Why air cooling?!

My studio is middle of nowhere and i have sometimes long electricity losses. Outside temp can be -30 C (-22 F) and thats why I chose air cooling.

Cool! I'll keep that in mind if I use the cooler again. I wound up switching it out for a 360 rad and that solved the problem.
