"Samsung’s Google Glass rival might turn your whole hand into a keyboard"

It seems that Samsung has been toying around with the idea of using its headset to impose an augmented reality keyboard onto users’ hands that will supposedly help them more easily write out messages. A concept drawing in the patent filing shows that Samsung has figured out a way to line up all 26 letters of the alphabet onto two human hands while leaving thumbs free to type away at the augmented reality keyboard.

While this is a very cool concept, it’s also one that seems wildly impractical. People wearing Glass already draw lots of attention to themselves and they’d only draw even more if they walked around holding their hands up to their faces and pecking away at virtual keyboards that only they can see. Also, in an age where voice commands have become so prevalent, we really have to wonder why someone would forsake them in favor of an augmented reality keyboard.

Okay, BGR is right in their 2nd paragraph I quoted: "People wearing Glass already draw lots of attention to themselves and they’d only draw even more if they walked around holding their hands up to their faces and pecking away at virtual keyboards that only they can see."

But the thing is, the people wearing Google Glass in public probably don't even care about this anyways. I do realize that to have something like Google Glass, you have to have voice commands to properly navigate and use the device. I get that, and people can do that, but there are some who do not want to that.

I, personally, am one of those people. I do not like to talk much. I especially do not like to say aloud what I am doing and stuff like that. I think you all get what I mean. So I personally love this AR keyboard idea. Yes, voice commands NEED to be implemented as well (and I'm sure they will be), but the AR keyboard adds a whole new variety of functionality.

Voice commands are going to be super annoying in public. Imagine everyone walking around talking to themselves, shouting at their Glass to do certain things.

It's bad enough when you're on a bus and someone's talking loudly on their phone.

I can't remember what country it is, I think Japan, where it's considered extremely rude and people will give you a death stare or tell you to get off the phone.
You might even be fined.

I can actually see this becoming useful, but only if it will operate how I think it will. Use your thumb to count the segments in your fingers, starting at the segment connected to your palm. Now, if each segment were a letter, you could easily type quickly with both hands at the same time using your thumbs without drawing much attention to yourself if you memorize the layout of the "keyboard"

Same. Most of what I type ends up getting auto corrected which is great since otherwise it would be complete gibberish. And every so often I manage to somehow type something with barely any errors or the auto correct doesn't correct my mistakes...

Just tested this out and it's actually quite intuitive (well typing on my hands as if the keys were in their designated positions, only problem is my hands have to practically fold in half to type some of the letters so the positioning could be improved but overall i'm quite excited for this :D

That's really clever of them. Seems like a very good addition to voice commands since that might need to be appropriate at all times.

now this is something i would care for an AR device, i have never used voice commands and i don't want to either because it feels wrong to talk whit a device

this is one of the greatest thing that has happened to me recently, and it happened on this forum, those involved have my eternal gratitude http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/198850-update-alex-got-his-moto-g2-lets-get-a-moto-g-for-alexgoeshigh-unofficial/ :')
