Probably crappy router that can't handle the many connections.

You can try reducing the max number of simultaneous connections in the BT client.

Check your connection limit under settings -> Connection -> Connection Limit

It should look like this:

Global connection: 500

Connections per torrent: 100

Global sending connections: 8

Sending connection per torrent: 4

doesn't bit torrent go against some kind of copyright laws?

Anything i've written between the * and * is not meant to be taken seriously.

keep in mind that helping with problems is hard if you aren't specific and detailed.

i'm also not a professional, (yet) so make sure to personally verify important information as i could be wrong.

Not necessarily, there are perfectly legal things you can download. Linux distros for example can usually be downloaded via torrents.

If used for illicit purposes, yes.

Torrents in and of themselves are nothing malicious or unlawful.

Well, there are many torrent clients, can be used for legal things and not so much, as many things in life. I highly recommend tixati for torrenting.

BitTorrent is just a file sharing protocol. The legality of the data being transferred is unrelated to the technology itself. Though you could argue the most common use of BitTorrent is for piracy hence its tainted reputation. But there are legitimate uses like transferring large datasets internally. For instance, your social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, etc. would use BitTorrent to sync and replicate their databases across multiple sites. That way the data users want to access can be from a nearby data centre rather than one halfway across the world. Your game downloads and patches from Steam or Blizzard, etc. are probably done via BitTorrent as well. It's much more reliable and generally faster than a single server to client connection. If one seeder drops out, another seeder in the pool can pick up the slack without delay.

Not BitTorrent per se, but they are using the P2P protocol (bittorrent is a client, P2P is the protocol).

As does Windows Update, for those unaware.
