Hi everyone. Hope you are doing well. I have nearly run out of storage on my 1tb nvme drive so need some more storage. This will have some games and video files on so would like it to be fast. I was thinking about the 1tb MX500. Is that a good option for around £100?

860 EVO, MX500 and WD Blue (not SN550) would all three be decent options.

They perform about equal to each other, so it's more of a "which brand do you prefer" and "which is the cheapest".

I would get that but my motherboard is a b450 tomahawk max and only has one m.2 slot :(

Look for a Kingston A2000, or since you won't be using it as a boot drive, a Crucial P1 if it's cheaper.

Then the MX500 is a solid choice. Other similar options would be the Samsung 860 EVO and ADATA SU800.

OP's motherboard only has a single M.2 slot, otherwise the A2000 would have been my recommendation (faster than the SATA drives I mentioned in my post at the same price).

I know the 860 evo is slightly faster than the mx500. Do you think it is worth spending £15 more on that.

I mean, the performance will be similar and for a casual user it doesn't matter.

The MX500 has better read, the 860 EVO better write. Not a noticeable difference.

The real difference is in the TBW (how much TB of data can be written to the drive before it fails).

Ok. And will a SATA ssd feel much slower than an nvme ssd or is there not much of a difference.

Depends on what you're doing, but I think in most use-cases you will not see a difference between SATA Or NVME drives.

22 minutes ago, Avocheeseado said:

This will have some games and video files

For these type of uses a SATA drive will be fine. Even for video editing, my 860 EVO is doing fine and not holding back performance of any of my other parts. Although that is partially because of my less than stellar CPU.

With the higher end CPU's, you would see a difference between a SATA and NVME SSD.

You could buy an adapter card and plug that adapter card into the pci-e x16 that gets pci-e lanes from the chipset (the bottom pci-e x16 slot).

M.2 NGFF to Desktop PCIe x4 x8 x16 NVMe SATA Dual SSD PCI Express Adapter Card | eBay

M.2 NGFF to Computer PCIe x4 x8 x16 NVMe SATA Dual SSD PCI Express Adapter Card | eBay

Your board has pci-e 2.0 x4 connection to that bottom pci-e x16, so that means you get 2 GB/s to the m.2 ssd... which is better than 560 MB/s a sata ssd can do

Now you can get a good fast nvme drive and put it on the adapter card or move your existing ssd to the adapter card and use the actual m.2 connector on the board.

closest to pci-e slot is for nvme m.2 drives, the one at the top is for sata only m.2 ssds (need to connect a sata cable to motherboard)

Also low profile versions with single m.2 nvme ssd placeholder, if you don't want adapter card to obstruct video card fans that much :

That could be an option but I already have a wifi card in the x4 slot. I think i will go for just a sata ssd
