Kape technology who owns PIA is based out of the UK. Same difference but the US has to jump thru some hoops to gain access.

Not to say you don’t need a VPN, but do you need a VPN..? A lot of folks seem to be jumping on the VPN train simply because all of the YouTube ads going towards promoting them. They are incredibly useful tools, but they are only a single tool in the toolbox of trying to anonymize your data, and that single tool alone will do very very little. If your trying to get around geo-restrictions, or download “questionable content” then yes, they are useful for that.

Can i ask why you want to use a VPN?

There's a lot of BS out there (VPN companies spread it on purpose) about how it helps privacy.

If you're using a home internet connection using a VPN does not make the internet or your privacy any more secure.

Please mark as helpful and informative so my profile looks better.

quote or reply to me if you want me to reply to you.

Thanks

Any if the following are pretty solid:

SurfShark, NordVPN, and ExpressVPN are recommended by a lot of YouTubers that do a lot of traveling so I guess you can't really go wrong with any of those.

I like Proton's VPN service as they are also known for their multi-layer encrypted email service (both of which I have used).

Dashlane is kinda unique because their subscriptions come bundled with a password manager, VPN, and identify theft insurance.

PIA is dirt cheap for the perfectly decent quality and is recommended by LMG (well, partially cuz they're a sponsor).

There are certain risks when using a VPN that I wasn't even aware of until I did a little research. Things like varying forced disclosure laws depending on where the VPN service is based, getting put on the "naughty list" by certain ISPs and government agencies, uncertainty around which VPN services actually do or do not log user connection & traffic data, and the potential for VPN server hacks like the recent one against NordVPN in 2018.

The biggest downside of VPNs in my opinion is the increased latency when gaming and streaming or when accessing a virtual desktop and being on a video call for work since everything is being routed through servers in another country.

VPNs are pretty great in general for anonymity and accessing sites blocked in other countries when traveling, viewing Netflix content available in other countries, circumventing data throttling, and even saving on airfare (though maybe not until coronavirus vaccines arrive).

I would only use a VPN for the reasons above, but not all the time as there are free DNS services like Blokada from F-Droid and 1.1.1.1 WARP from CloudFlare that add some layers of security found in VPNs without compromising on bandwidth and latency.
