but not worth it if you can upgrade your current setup to 3x 1600x900 = 4800x900 for the same price which is WAY better reconsidering his type of games ;) simulators and Battlefield mostly support surround/eyefinity anyways

EDIT: plus his monitor is IPS, a 1080p IPS screen is nowhere close to being cheap ;) at least here in germany

If so then wait until october since the high-end chips like GTX880, 890 and 880Ti won't be released before that (new manufacturing process) and a 870 might be rather overpriced compared to a 780.

In the meantime you should look into surround-gaming. That should decide if you want to go for 3 monitor gaming (full ingame experience - not as much as oculus but good) or one big high-res screen which is better for competetive games like StarCraft, LoL or DotA  since multimonitor is disabled there or you like watching stuff in a homecinema.

I personally prefer 3 monitors around me to fill my field of view instead of one giant flat(!) screen. It's also a better working experience (I can't do shit at work because I'm used to my 3 screens instead of just one and always get confused with all those stacked icons in the taskbar xD) ;)

So maybe I should go for SLI GTX 465s until then? Or should I get 2 more 1600x900s?

yeah well for a 24" 1080p IPS monitor without ghosting I have to pay 273€ here in germany. well stuff is more expensive here anyways but still a 1600x900 IPS monitor is somewhere around 80€

So maybe I should go for SLI GTX 465s until then? Or should I get 2 more 1600x900s?

depends. how much would a GTX465 cost you?

I guess a new board and PSU will be needed anyways ;)

my personal recommendation: Corsair RM-series or if not sufficient AX-series and for a MB you should know that yourself :P be it ASRock, ASUS or Gigabyte (I kinda dislike MSI)

A 465 costs $70

A new motherboard costs $170 (ASRock Extreme 9)

A 1200W psu costs $270-400

what about monitors? I guess pricing will be very different in the US.

if you wanna go for surround (which I'd recommend for your choice of games) you should get your monitors first.

getting another bunch of GPUs wont really give you any advantage with just one or two monitors ;)

although $70 is a crazy cheap price I have to admit, if they were so cheap here I probably would have build a mineral oil PC with 3 way GTX465 just for decorations month ago :D

monitors first I guess, then PSU, then MB, then GPU if it's still needed. (don't know if you want to get a new MB even without SLI setup? if not that also would be replaced with the Maxwell card) ;)

but either way you might want to build a GTX465 rig later on - maybe with on a LGA775 platform and mineral oil cooled :D

a spare HDD and some other old stuff would be enough for that. considering the price of those GPUs it's almost a shame to not do it :D

Do you think a 2GB GTX 770 ($339) could handle 4800x900?

nope no matter which card you get 4GB should be minimum. I had 2GB of video ram with my 2 GTX560Ti's and they didnt even run Bulletstorm on low graphics in 3840x1024. remember resolution needs VRAM not GPU power ;) 4GB should be able to handle 4800x900 since they are the sweet-spot for 1080p surround and so you will have a little headroom.

The 4GB 770 is $70 more

My #1 goal is to play ARMA 3 on MAX settings with max view distance

then again VRAM should be greatly considered since view distance also requires a lot of VRAM in accordance to GPU power (shader-rendering, sample-data, etc).

so since your goal is max settings in a sim (ArmA 3) on a rather high or medium resolution you should get 3GB minimum, and since you want to go surround considering a 4GB is what I recommend. ;)

if you like your monitors already, there is not point of getting a new one..just make sure that the 4800x900 works.

And then get a 780/780ti with the $700 you have budgeted. That way you have both the lulz (4800x900) and logical/smart decision (780)

The GTX 770 has too little power to support more than 2GB. Unless you overclock the balls off of it, or put it into SLI, you aren't going to see any improvement in higher resolutions. Benchmarks between the 2 and 4GB cards are alike, even in a triple monitor config. So, yea, don't buy it unless you're going to put it in SLI in the future. Might as well get a GTX 780 if you think you need more VRAM.

Personally I'd go with a GTX 760 and possibly a G-Sync monitor if you felt like waiting. Otherwise you might as well get a GTX 770 2GB and a third monitor, or GTX 780 (EVGA's B-Stock if you need cheaper) if you're concerned about stretching the limited VRAM in the 770.

if you have to insist you think for yourself, i'm not going to believe you.
