Best aspect ratio for a modern panel for gamecube?

starry

I have a Gamecube, it looks like stretched garbage on my 16:9 panel, and even my 4:3 one. I have a dongle that lets me use HDMI, and many other dongles to adapt hdmi to whatever I want. Im wondering what kind of panel I should look for other than a CRT (they give me a headache) to play my Gamecube on. I dont like letterbox mode either, it feels lame. I just need the closest aspect ratio I can get, so that the stretching isnt so bad. Google hasnt been very helpful.

Smaller CRT's have less flicker, so I prefer those. Still though I'm looking at 4:3.

Gamecube plays natively on 4:3 but has games that allow 16:9. So I think something is wrong with your display.

Gamecube is optimized for CRT 4:3 so it will looked garbage on modern lcd.

This is the same panel Ive used as my second monitor for years with no weird stretching issues, perhaps theres something wrong with my HDMI dongle

Oh interesting. Is there anything I can do about that? CRTs give me a really bad headache, Im extremely sensitive to light.

I fixed the issue by using a higher refresh rate crt for me when using my pc but other than that not really. The other step is emulation.

What refresh rate do you use? So I can get an idea of what numbers to look for.

I was just a kid last time I had a CRT so I have no idea.

The GameCube natively outputs at 720x480 at 60/59.94 (if you wanna split hairs) Hz. I believe most HDMI solutions for the GameCube that rely on the Digital AV Out allow you to force an output of 640x480, as nothing really goes past that on the system, so if it has settings that allow you to do that... do that.

I'll add to that blurb with this: most games were designed to be displayed at 720x480 in a 640x480 frame. It's why render resolutions of something like 584x480 aren't uncommon. Essentially, the GameCube tends to display like this:

Gd5Nx.png

Which makes it a little annoying to make work on a 4:3 monitor, because unlike the Xbox, which stretches all the output to the full 720x480 frame and the PS2, which displays things in a 640x448 frame, the GameCube's odd choice of framing its output can make it really tedious to work with, at least concerning trying to display it on a 4:3 monitor.

I have a GameCube (early model with digital output connector, which I never had the cables for) and my computer monitor support composite (as well as component, HDMI, Display Port and DVI but that is not the point). It's fine. But my monitor support something your TV needs and that is 1:1 mode. Check your TV for this mode.. This mode will not stretch the aspect ratio.

Then the rest comes from how good the TV is at converting analog signal to digital.

GameCube supports 16:9 on select games only. Progressive scan is also on select games and require the rare component cables to use.

As a PAL Gamecube Owner I can say for certain the the 4:3 ratio was used in all the games. The Few games that have a 16:9 ratio started in a 4:3 ratio.. (In my personal Collection only two games I am aware had support, F-Zero GX and Star Fox Adventures.)

Another issue is which was still present during this era, was that some games ended having noticeable letter box effect on PAL systems (This was often a side effect of 60Hz NTSC conversion to 50Hz PAL). I'm personally not aware of GC game that this effect, but I've spotted it on several PS1 and PS2 games of the era.

Also as Digital Port GC owner, I'd use the Eon MK2.. and setting things to be at 4:3 best way to go.
