is this technically possible? if yes, would people usually do it?

RAM is on the order of 10 times faster than what a PCIe4 SSD could do in the best conditions in terms of bulk transfer speed, and many times more in the way RAM is typically accessed.

 

Also don't forget that flash has limited write endurance. If you somehow could use an NVMe SSD as your only RAM which you can't, the SSD would die within a few days.

nvme is not ram. and yes ram would be faster, 

once you run out of ram you start page filing to your drive. ram has way more bandwidth and it is made to be directly accessed, not like a drive where you have to go through a controller etc..

as others said it isnt ram and it is slow. and swap space is a thing but its (then again) slow and i dont think nvme can even reach ddr2 speeds!

Ram is more than 10x faster than NVMe.

Real RAM is orders of magnitudes faster, and more resilient, if you need to use an SSD as RAM Optane would be the best choice.

The opposite would be more practical and cool. Use RAM as SSD making a RamDrive
