To buy from Craigslist or not?

Jason 57

So last fall I bought a MSI GTX 1070 Gaming X off eBay for $200. It was a much needed upgrade from my MSI Radeon R7770s in Crossfire. (my daughter couldn't play Overwatch at anything over than 15FPS.)

So even though I am now looking at upgrading my CPU combo from an Athlon FX2 X860 processor to a Ryzen 5 3600,

I have come across someone locally selling a GTX 1080 Winforce 8GB for $300. For a second I thought I about buying it then selling it on eBay for more, so I could get the money for my CPU upgrade. LOL

But I wasn't sure if it was really worth spending the money I was going to use for my CPU/MB/Memory upgrade to buy yet another video card.

And looking at the GPU Hierarchy Chart at Tom's Hardware, I would be better off spending the $300 on a RX 5600XT.

Could I get anyone's opinion on this?

My 2020 Upgrade: CPU: Ryzen 5 3600; MB: MSI X570 Tomohawk WiFi; Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws V 32GB 3600 MHz; Case: Lian Li Lancool II Mesh Performance; PSU: Corsair RM550X 80+ Gold; Storage: WD Blue 500GB SSD; Seagate 4TB Compute HDD; Monitor: GIGABYTE G34WQC 34" 144Hz Curved Gaming Monitor, 3440 x 1440 VA 1500R Display

Previous Components Still Using: GPU: MSI GTX 1070 (bought Used); Storage: WD 3TB Green HDD,WD 1TB Black HDD, SanDisk SSD PLUS 240GB

Previous Monitor I want to VESA mount: LG 29UB55-B 29" Ultrawide 1080p 60Hz IPS

Don't forget about fees, and you'd need to stress test the 1080 to make sure its still performing (maybe even re-apply thermal paste as the card is older). So flipping might not give you all the money you want, and 1080 prices have come down. I sold mine for £300 recently, I think others are also now upgrading to 2070S and above.

If you're flipping, consider fees and making sure what you're buying is solid before selling. Plus you add the risk of sitting on it if someone else doesn't buy.

I'd not bother, too much effort for the return.

SETUP:

  • Ryzen 9 3900XT @ 4.3 all core (peak core voltage 1.3)  (water)
  • 2x8GB TeamGroup 8Pack Ripped Edition 3600mhz CL14
  • RTX 2080ti OCd @ +150 core, +1000 memory (water)
  • Aorus B550 Elite (rev1)

Personal Bests:

  • Cinebench R15: 1785  1883 (Aug 2020)
  • Cinebench R20: 4136  4243 7125 7550 (Feb 2021)
  • 3DMark/Time Spy: 10,238 13,106 13,993 14,149 15,295 (Feb 2021)

Good point. Maybe it isn't worth the hassle. I had offered $225 cash. They wanted $350 OBO. It was a month old post, so I figured I would toss an offer out there.

Maybe I'll just see if this GTX 1070 can last me until next year, then see if the RTX 3060 Super (I am guessing at what models will be available) I can afford.

I do either. They are both the same to me. eBay sellers gotta ask more given all the fees so local always works out better.

If you can get an amazing deal, do it.

I got a full system with the following specs for £600

GTX 1080

i7-6700

16GB 3000mhz RAM

NVME SSD

3TB HDD.

Originally listed for £750 on eBay. Offered him and he said yes when it didn't sell.

You 100% take advantage of deals like that because the gains are worth the effort.

Just ask yourself if the costs of your efforts are worth the overall profit. If you can get it for 250-270 cash today then I'd probably do it.

SETUP:

I was surprised that I got such a quick response from the seller.

But he wanted to hold out for $300. So oh well.

For that, I can get a case and a CPU. Well trying to keep my case price below $150. LOL

There are some tremendous cases in the sub $100 market.

If you want to spend your whole budget Ive been eyeing up the O11 Dynamic.

Yeah I had that on my looking list.

My goal is to FINALLY get my tower off the floor and onto my desk.

(Granted I have to expand my desk surface area first! Step 1, move the cable modem and router to a shelf on the wall. Step 2, move the BOSU ball next to my desk to the garage onto the shelving units I installed. Step 3, measure my new desk size and cut my leftover wood (0.75" plywood) to fit, stain and polyurethane(sp?) and install)

I should probably do a post on this progression with photos, so everyone can join in the enjoyment with me! LMAO

Since I currently have 2HDDs and 2SSDs, I am most likely getting a compact Mid-tower case. Phanteks P300A (I like the mesh front)

Still sad to lose my 12 year old ODD. (Currently using it to convert my DVDs/Blu-rays to digital.)

Oof yeah, you need space for that storage.

Please share your journey with it all. I'd love to see a whole setup refurb!

I'm actually hiring a carpenter to make my new desk with routing for RGB, cabling etc. xD
