Do I need to install drivers in 2020? Lol.

Okay, so I just got my new PC and I received a DVD with the chipset drivers on it. Back in the day I used to download and install drivers from the motherboard's official website but do I really need to do it in 2020? I mean I have Windows 10. Do I need to install any driver from the DVD (or the website) separately? Windows 10 kinda does all that automatically, doesn't it? What if I manually install drivers anyway? Will it overwrite them? Will it causes issues?

My rule of thumb is to not update or change drivers (sans GPU) unless something isnt working as intended or as you think it should.

I recommend downloading Nvidia or AMD drivers for your dedicated graphics card. Other drivers aren't neccessary unless something is not running properly.

Okay so unless I experience any issues I should just skip installing drivers, except for the graphics card. Thanks for the reply.

I always say yes, if you can and have time, go to the manufacturers website and download the latest drivers. This is Always  good practice and makes sure the hardware runs optimally according to those who designed it.

I say only download gpu drivers. Leave everything else unless something isn't working right.

Yes, the driver disk can be useless in some cases, as its normaly got older drivers on it compared to what windows installs itself.

 

The only time i found the driver disk was useful was on my prior graphics card, Windows 7 64 bit could not detect it, and the nVidia drivers refused to install any drivers, so the disk came in handy when i attempted to clean install.

for a new build I'd install all needed drivers like chipset and GPU yourself as I don't trust windows to grab the newest one.

when it comes to updating. I really only update GPU drives with the rare bios update (I do regularly update my laptop bios because I'm using a 3000 APU based laptop)

Yes, highly recommend to install all the needed drivers from the board vendors website AND the chipset drivers from the CPU OEM website. Same for the GPU

Windows does a good job of having comprehensive drivers, but these people saying you shouldn't update them are insane. Always, always, always get the latest drivers for your chipset and GPU, from the manufacturers' websites. As far as audio, network, etc. drivers go, that's probably less important, but I would say update those as well. I wouldn't do beta drivers, unless there's a specific issue you're encountering that they're meant to solve, but if it's an official release, just upgrade.

Well, I've been using Windows 10 on my new pc ever since I made this forum thread and literally the only driver I manually installed was NVIDIA Driver for RTX2060. That's all I did. Everything is plug & play, (for example Xbox one wireless usb adapter, controller, etc) I don't have to do anything. I haven't run into any issues as of yet, everything's working just fine.
