I should clearify im underwhelmed when it comes to enabling it on Windows my PS4 Pro seems fine.

But everything looks fine on the TV normally, but when I enable HDR in windows settings the desktop display gets very drab looking, colours are very washed out,

I have not run a large gammet of games yet but have noticed Horizon 4 and Grid 2019 gave me similer disapointing washed out colours... Is this what i can expect from HDR on windows in its current state? If so im very disapointed. please tell me I am missing some kinda step.

Edit - TV is a Samsung Q80R

Enabling HDR increases bandwidth requirements. And since its a TV , ur using HDMI.

Ensure your still running full 4:4:4 chroma subsampling and full color range.

Open NVCP.

Select change resolution.

scroll down

Make sure 'output color depth' is 10bit for HDR

Set 'output color format' to YCbCr 444 to get full color range (this will get rid of the washed out look)

You will likely find ull have to drop down to 50hz for 4k HDR 10bit 444 chroma using HDMi 2.0.

FYI , Samsung TV's 'game mode' disables local dimming, dont expect as deep blacks as u would see when watching a movie from another source.

Honestly I've had the same problem. But most probabbly here we should blame it on WIndows, as the HDR Implementation on Windows is a disaster

It is what you can expect from Windows HDR, thing will basically turn purple when you turn it on. Although you can calibrate te colour to make that colour space more usable (reduce the blue light from 50 to 40 seem to just automatically help.)

So what I can expect of it is that it looks worse then just leaving the content SDR...

Most of the time yes unless you fiddle with the settings

yes, pretty much - Windows HDR just not function well at the moment which is why all PC monitor with decent HDR capability have their own firmware function to activate HDR which by pass Windows terrible implementation (*although with calibration some game do look better with HDR than SDR)

if you have that on your TV I would suggest you using it instead of Windows HDR, it just doesn't work at this moment

Enabling HDR increases bandwidth requirements. And since its a TV , ur using HDMI.

Ensure your still running full 4:4:4 chroma subsampling and full color range.

Open NVCP.

Select change resolution.

Set 'output color format' to YCbCr 444 to get full color range (this will get rid of the washed out look)

Not overly fond of running at 50hz but will give it a try to see if it bugs me. I need to mess around cause it turns my brightness down a fair amount when I do so I need to mess with the TV.

Ah yes ofc, Nvidia/Windows has a 'thing' with HDMI ..only 8bit or 12bit is on offer.

10bit isnt available for desktop and OpenGL with consumer GTX and RTX cards. Only available with Quadro cards.

However if u set to 8bit (with 'full' dynamic range) ull be fine, in HDR games they should still switch over and output 10bit if designed that way since DirectX 11 allows it, in exclusive fullscreen mode ofc.

If u want to output windows desktop above 8bit, set it to 12bit by lowering frequency to something like 30hz.

Ok will keep that in mind, follow up issue though is setting the screen to 50hz is also resizing the desktop and pushing my start menu off screen, I tried to play with an overscan setting on the TV by turning it off auto 16:9 but that wouldnt take, only option was to resize the desktop in nvidia control panal which id rather not do if I can

More importaintly though sometimes 4:4:4 just refuses to take... it will be in RGB, I change it the popup saying accept this comes up, I do and then it immedately goes back to RGB.

Resizing it...and applying the werid af resoluton seems to fix it then I go back to the normal 3840x2160 and its fine... but I cant enable anyhting other then limited output dynamic range.

Set RGB to 'full' instead of 'limited' same effect as YCbCr 444.

As for the size issue, thats odd, try messing with the 'scaling' option.

Go to 'adjust desktop size and composition' and change the scaling option and what does the scaling.

Thank you so much for the help, I never would have gotten to the bottom of this on my own and its taken me like a week of ripping my hair out but I am quite amazed now with the results.

For anyone who does happen to stumble into this thread in the future.
first pic is HDR off, second pic is HDR on.
