Yes I am well aware that the FX-9590 is out of date. Here is my delema, I have no more than 500USD to upgrade my current computer.

Current CPU: FX-6300

Current Motherboard: M5A78L-M/USB3 (not compatible)

Current Ram: 16gb DDR3

Current Graphic: R7 370

Current Power Supply: 550w

I still run an Actual Hard drive and I am thinking about putting a cheap SSD in with it.

My current question is what mother board should I use with the FX-9590 and what cooler should I be looking at.

Please be aware I am very limited on budget and do not currently have the money for other upgrades at this time nor the money to be buying modern hardware outright. I am attempting to use the current hardware I have at hand to get a decent computer again.

I will also look at spending the remaining budget on possibly a graphics card or power supply.

Thank You to anyone with helpful advice!!!!

The Asus Sabortooth Revision 2.0 would be a good choice. (must be rev 2.0)

Or the Crosshair V formula-z.

Any lesser of motherboards are going to struggle handling the power draw that chip is capable of.

Then you have to worry about v-droop and v-drop on that v-core. Damn chips where hardly stable from the factory honestly.

Needs top end cooling. These FX-9590's are 220w boxed and do not come with a cooler. AMD themselves actually recommend liquid cooling.

Any other information you need, feel free to ask.

$500 is quite a lot to play around with, even to switch platforms. If you're really budget-constrained, look into a used Ryzen 5 1600 and a decent B350/B450 board with some DDR4 RAM, it should leave you with more than enough money to upgrade your GPU even. Going the FX-9590 route is really gonna leave you strapped for cash for upgrading much outside of anything to actually run that CPU.

Think he'll go for a platform upgrade?? (I'd hope so.....)

It really sounded like he worded it that he recently purchased the FX-9590 and seems like he'd like to use it.

Wonder what the story is. Perhaps there's an option to return the FX if recently purchased for a refund. 🤔

For $500 you can get a great ryzen 3 CPU and motherboard from craigslist, far better than the old AMD crap.

Yea its been sometime since I looked into upgrading or building a computer (6years) and since I plan on reusing the power supply(hopefully it doesn't die) Hard drive, and case should save some money. I started doing some light video editing in the last year and I tell you an old 3core/ 6 thread cpu does not like video editing. I was more looking to upgrade what I have. Though if I am going to have to upgrade the mother board anyway I might as well go up to an AMD4 socket and at least leave myself some options for the future.

using an fx 8 core still, seriously a 100 ryzen 4 core smashes it at stock settings. Get something new, keep your hdd case, psu and anything else you can

I have to agree with lot of the other posters here. It’s not worth upgrading the fx line, especially if you are talking about buying a motherboard.

It might be ok, if you were investing no more than $40, but you can do a lot better with a few hundred dollars.

heck even a Ryzen 3100 build will run circles around the fx line.and you can be up and running for around $300

It comes with the usual pre-applied stuff, it will work but getting better TIM for it is a good idea.
That's what I'd do, MX4 is good and cheap enough to do the job.

Ok looks like the GPU is compatible. I know it sounds crazy but atm I don't need a better video card.

Thank You for all the help looks like I am going to go with

G.Skill RipJaws V Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 288-Pin SDRAM PC4-28800 DDR4 3600 CL16-19-19-39 1.35V Dual Channel Desktop Memory Model F4-3600C16D-16GVKC

AMD Ryzen 5 3600 6-Core, 12-Thread Unlocked Desktop Processor with Wraith Stealth Cooler with B450-F Gaming Motherboard (ATX)

All for 381USD leaving me with room in case something goes horribly wrong. Final thoughts from anyone?

Looks good from here but I think you could do better on the RAM as in better specs.

Here's a few to look at.
Note that this is at the US location of the egg.
The best set overall out of these: G.SKILL TridentZ Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3600 (PC4 28800) Intel Z170 / Z270 / Z370 / X299 Desktop Memory Model F4-3600C16D-16GTZSW - Newegg.com

These say they are for Ryzen and are the cheapest: G.SKILL Trident Z Neo (For AMD Ryzen) Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 288-Pin RGB DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3600 (PC4 28800) Desktop Memory Model F4-3600C16D-16GTZNC - Newegg.com

And if you want a little bling: G.SKILL Trident Z Royal Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3600 (PC4 28800) Desktop Memory Model F4-3600C16D-16GTRSC - Newegg.com

All will work with the Ryzen setup even though they say they are for Z170 and so on - Have a couple of sets of the good ones and have ran them to know it.

Whatever works is fine and if you can get a set of the really good ones you'll be OK.
BTW those you have listed are nice too - And cheap to boot.

I mean 500 USD? You can easily build half a new computer for that.

that puts you in a great spot where then you can just save up for a new GPU and be perfect... Hell if your current PSU is good, and you can get a measly $30-40 more, you could get an Rx 580 or a 1650 super pretty easily. Or with current budget an Rx 570; but I don't think it's much of a leap over a 370.

His ram is fine, that’s a 40 dollar premium for your slightly tighter timing ram, same cas and MHz. I don’t think you would have a noticeable difference between the two

It does and for now new cpu new motherboard and new ram will do well. I will look at doing other upgrades in the future. One of the reasons I want to leave over 100$ in the budget is I am known for breaking things so... If I break something I want to be able to replace it.

You said your pc is pushing 6-7 years old? Do you know what power supply you have? Depending on the quality of the unit you might be getting close to needing to replace it.

I mean if it’s like a no name unit or a budget psu for it’s time, I would say 7 years is a good time to preemptively change it.

I'd still go for one of the sets I suggested simply because the 3700x itself can clock RAM up - Would be a waste to leave it's potential untapped and the Geil sticks in question, although good most likely won't get that high with reviews all seeming to agree that they are good for around 3200 or so.

BTW this is what I did with my 3600x and the first set I listed above.
Bones`s Memory Frequency score: 2232.8 MHz with a DDR4 SDRAM

If they can do that, they are certainly capable of running at or even a little beyond their rated speed with the stock specs/timings as these did.

I'd recommend this. Pretty juicy balance of performance, quality, price. You even have some spare money to get a higher quality cooling solution for the CPU. Improving thermals and performance is always a nice thing. :)
