CPU_PWR2 (extra 4pin cpu connector)

Recently I've been looking at new parts and planning an upgrade but the new Z390 motherboards require 8pin + 4pin cpu connections.

My power supply is a corsair rm650i and only has the 4+4pin (8pin) connector. 

I've already bought an rtx 2080 super and im looking to pair it with an i9 9900k and I will most likely push it to 5ghz on all cores.

 

I have read online that the second connection may be required for overclocks on both the cpu and gpu which I am likely to do. Should I look into getting a new power supply that supports the extra 4pin power connector?

I've been looking into corsair's RM850i which has 2x 4+4 cpu cables. If i were to buy this power supply instead, would it be okay to plug in both 4+4+4 and leave the other 4 disconnected?

What I did, but do it on your own  responsibility, was I modified a 6 pin pci-e power to 4 pin cpu power 2 and It works no problems. Its not that hard only thing is you need to take your time and not f up the pin out.

Yes it's fine to leave one 4 pin disconnected on the power supply 

So yes it would be fine to plug in one 4+4 pin and another 4 pin leaving a 4 pin disconnected

damn I wouldn't want to do this and risk breaking anything. I'm far too shaky to be messing with pins lool

thanks for the suggestion but I don't trust myself to do this

I think it's safe to not plug the 4pin though so you could try that and then replace the psu if you need to?

unless your trying to do high overclocks?

That extra 4pin is as useless as tits on a fish, 9900k will not pull enough power to need it without liquid nitrogen.

no because the CPU power connector powers the CPU exclusively

thanks for the suggestion but I don't trust myself to do this

Well its so simple, I used a sim removal tool to remove the pins and  rearrange them. 2 12v pins and 2 ground and that is it. Nothing special.
