So recently my children and I experienced a house fire.  we lost everything.  so, I a now needing to build my children PCs they both do games and my son does some streaming of the games.  so should I build a multi core unit they can both use at once or 2 separate PCs.  I have seen so many youtube videos and am confused on what to buy and with insurance money being so slow with what's going on with the virus right now money is a bit low.  Any information would be great.

probably two pc's. Mauby not two identical. If your son streams he could get a little better pc than your other child (this is just my opinion, you make the choice).

Imo you should buy two separate machines.

As for the streaming one, the Ryzen 1600AF is quite cheap and offers 6cores of basically Zen+ architecture.

What games do they play?

Gaming HTPC:

R5 5600X - Cryorig C7 - Asus ROG B350-i - EVGA RTX2060KO - 16gb G.Skill Ripjaws V 3333mhz - Corsair SF450 - 500gb 960 EVO - LianLi TU100B

Sorry to hear what happened to you and your family at least you and your children are okay. As for your question

Any PC you will buy will have a multi core CPU it will still be only able to play 1 game at a time. When I grew up I had to share a PC with my brother, there are multiplayer games you can play together on one machine. Of course that was in the 90s and nowadays I would guess your children each want their own computer.

You could also tell them they have to share one machine, set up 2 different profiles with their own password each. That means you might have them argue over who can use it at what time. You could also consider buying a PC that they share and a console. Consoles have a much lower initial cost but can be expensive in the long run (games and peripheral devices like controllers for example tend to cost more). Of course usually they also need a TV (unless you buy a nintendo switch light).

However when money is really tight, and I can't imagine what it would be like to lose everything for me right now and I don't know your other circumstances, but I do believe your best option then would be to look at the used market. It takes a bit of caution and patience but you can save a bunch there. Of course you would have no warranty and you would have to replace parts if something isn't working. However if you pay half the price for a used PC you can buy everything twice in theory. Normally if you look at listings you can see if the previous owner took care of something or not. Often people will sell 1yr or 2yr old hardware that is perfectly fine, but they want the newest stuff. When everything is ok people usually let you come over and look at it too.

But yeah that is all up to you. If you don't want that headache, I'm sure people here are also happy to make you 2 budget builds that can do what your children are trying to do with their computers. You just have to provide a maximum budget that you are willing to spend, or like FloRolf said give us an idea what games they play and you will receive a parts list and you can build the computer yourself. There are also prebuilt options of course, but those generally cost a bit more and have worse performance.

2 modestly priced gaming computers would be the better choice, or you could buy one and they could take turns like the old days. Trying to setup a small server and a couple thin clients has a lot of extra complexity and cost associated with it, especially if you end up having to pay for software to run your virtual instances

Anything with a GTX 950 or newer will have an nvenc encoder, so you could skimp on the CPU and stream via the graphics card in a pinch. An old system with an i5 or Xeon would make for a decent system.

budget is low but I really want to do something nice for my children to get their spirits up.  and you're probably right 2 PCs would probably make more sense I just was watching linus videos about multiple people gaming on one pc which to be honest I dont really understand how they did that.  plus if it is 2 pcs than they can put together their own instead of them both building the same one.   thank you for all your responses so fast.
