Replaced CPU but PC wont start

JeppeBjorn

hey!

So i'm a complete computer noob, I recently purchased an I7 9700K to replace my previous I5 6600K

I replaced the cpu and pressed the power button but nothing happened. I was worried that something in my computer had broken so I replaced the I7 back to the I5 to see if the PC still worked, and it did.

I'm not sure why my computer wont work with the new CPU and need help!

These are my current specs:

OS: Microsoft Windows 10 Home x64 bit

Version: 10.0.18362 Build 18362

CPU: I5 6600K

GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970

RAM: 16 GB Corsair Vengeance

Motherboard: STRIX B250F Gaming (Rev X.0x)

PSU: Corsair VS 550

BIOS mode: UEFI

EDIT: cannot explain how useful everyone's replies have been thank you so much!

Because Intel is Intel, not all LGA1151 is created equal. It's officially split between 6th/7th and 8th/9th gen, so 6th and 7th gen CPUs officially only fit 100 and 200 series boards, and 8th and 9th gen CPUs officially only fit 300 series boards. There are BIOS mods that allow you to run CPUs in the "wrong" board as there's little actual difference between the chipsets, but those can be pretty sketchy.

You need a new mobo. 2xx chipsets only do 6th and 7th gen, 8th and 9th need 3xx chipsets.

Agreed, it's a generation thing. Sometimes you can flash a new bios to support the new chip but I believe it's down to power supply/management on the boards not being strong enough.

As others have said, your motherboard is not compatible with your CPU.

These options are:

I'd recommend Z390 though.
