Is 2080 Super Overkill?

Comedy Man 44

Hey everyone,

I am thinking about getting a GTX 2080 Super with Ryzen 3700x and 32gb 3600 DDR4 ram and I'm wondering if its overkill given that my monitor is 1080p 60hz. I want to get a good GPU to last a while but also don't want to pay a premium for something that I will not be able to see the benefit from. For reference I am planning to play games like COD Warzone and BF5. Thanks!

Extremely overkill, but i would do it anyway. If you ever want to upgrade to a 1440p, 144hz, this will push every game at that resolution on very high settings very well.

What do you think is a more appropriate GPU as I honestly dont see myself upgrading the monitor for a long time- long enough time that I will have bought a new GPU by that point honestly. Thanks!

for 1080p 60hz on max settings, i would go for a 2070 super. This will push modern warfare and battlefield 5 at max settings 1080p60 and games that will be coming out in the future

Very, and not particularly good value either, the RX 5700XT makes a lot sense, even though it to is overkill. But you could get an RX 5700xt plus a 1440p 144Hz 1ms  FreeSync display for less than a 2080S. Also, not giving up much performance either, the 2060S, 2070S, and 2080S no longer make any sense in my opinion.

Option 1: Buy 2080 Super and then save money to buy a better monitor in near future. For example: ASUS ROG Strix XG248Q 23.8” Gaming Monitor Full HD 1080P 240Hz 1ms Eye Care G-Sync Compatible Adaptive Sync Esports with DP Dual HDMI which is cca. 300$

Option 2: Buy 2070 Super which will save you 100-150$ compared to 2080 Super. Then add some money to buy1440p 144Hz Monitor

To be an expert is to know more about less.

What's your current setup?

My current setup is really bad.

CPU: I5-2320

GPU: GTX 770

Memory: 16GB

Nothing else is notable except that there is an SSD (Samsung EVO), but when I try to play COD Warzone it crashes, also my computer will sometimes just crash as well. I think it's because I bought a crappy PSU a long time ago. In general my system is in need of an upgrade.

The only game out there that no GPU is powerful enough is FFXV. This is because the PC version uses a lot of nVidia API fluff.  For all other games, you will need to look and see if it uses the nVidia gameworks libraries. Because if it doesn't, then the RT portion of the card is essentially wasted.

Thanks for the response, another user mentioned that RX5700XT is a better value than 2070 Super, do you agree. Also do you think that my ram is overkill too, or is it fine?

16GB is not overkill but you have a dated system. If you upgrade GPU expect a bottleneck.

Thanks!

Yeah, like buying  Corvette and driving in neighborhood streets.

WHy are you stubborn about buying a better monitor?  What makes your 1080p/60z so good?

There is no Overkill when it comes to GPU.

You will always find a way to bring it down 😉

1080p / 60 Hz Monitor?

No Problem:

- Nvidia Driver -> 3D Settings -> "DSR" -> activate the x4.00 Setting (DSR Smoothness can be reduced to 0-20%).

When you start your Game, open  Graphic Settings, change resolution to 3840x2160.

Your Computer will render the Game in 4k Resolution, and scale it down to your 1080p Monitor.
It's not the "real 4k" experience, but it comes really damn close.

still: I would suggest upgrading your Monitor. Having native 1440p gives many benefits, even in Desktop. Especially when you combine it with 144 Hz and Freesync/G-Sync Compatible.

1440p Can also use DSR, and go up to 5k Render Resolution (x2,25 will make 1440p -> 4k).

Or a real native 4k / 120 Hz Monitor.

Because let's be honest. If you have 1200+ bucks to get a 2080 ti, you HAVE enough money (no discussion, you HAVE it. Period) for a 300-500 bucks Monitor.

Let's be Real: If you don't use DSR; and just use the Monitor resolution + ingame settings. No matter which Graphics card you buy. You could wait 10 years and buy a RTX 5080 ti, and everything will look like Garbage. Because your Monitor is the Bottleneck by having a low Resolution - yes, 1080p is a very low resolution. Ver ylow in details, alot of flickering on the edges, etc etc.

The Graphic performance won't get you anywhere,if your Display can't show it to you.

So the least you can do: DSR, and game in virtual 4k. I'm sure, you will see for yourself, why you should invest in a better Monitor 😉

Just... you can't simulate more than 60 Hz. And THIS is sadly what First Person Shooter Games benefit the most from.

Thanks for the response, another user mentioned that RX5700XT is a better value than 2070 Super, do you agree. Also do you think that my ram is overkill too, or is it fine?

Here are screenshots comparing RX 5700XT v 2070 Super:

RTX 2070 Super has the NVENC encoder which is really good if you plan to stream.

I would recommend for you to watch this video from Linus where I got the screenshots from.

16GB of RAM in 2020 is a must have because slowly games are increasing their RAM usage. 32GB is good if you plan to edit, render videos etc. (workstation stuff).

Here is a cca. 2000$ Gaming PC

No such thing as overkill. I’d use it for 1080p assuming I could get a cpu to support that.
