[SOLVED] Have I killed my motherboard?

Go to solution Solved by oeci,

Check the CPU, are there any bent pins? Have you tried booting with only one RAM module in place (try both modules individually). Check all cables, is the CPU power (8 pin cable) connected? If you put in your old CPU, does the system post?

A few days ago I replaced my R3 1300X with an R5 3600 and ended up with two faulty RAM slots (1 and 2 worked but 3 and 4 gave beep codes). I decided to reseat my CPU but in doing so I ended up with a non functional computer. Great!

Symptoms include: Power button and shorting the pins does absolutely nothing, no fans spin or lights turn on at all. LEDs on the motherboard which usually turn on with power going from PSU do not. Funnily enough if I plug in a USB device such as a keyboard with any form of LEDs in it they will light up (which makes me believe it is not the PSU at fault).

I have tried: Removing RAM (nothing), Removing 24 pin (my keyboard would stop lighting up at this point) and reseating 24 pin (my keyboard lit up once again), Unplugging and plugging back in the kettle plug for AC and turning the PSU on and off to check that I'm not doing this while the PSU is off (nothing).

Specs:

Motherboard: PRIME B350 PLUS

CPU: R3 1300X (OLD) / R5 3600 (CURRENT) with stock cooler

Memory: 2x 8GB Corsair Vengeance LPX 3000Mhz

GPU: MSI Gaming X GTX 1060 6GB

Case: S340 Elite

Storage: WD Blue 1TB HDD & Samsung EVO SSD

The likely outcome is my motherboard is buggered (I suspect so because of the motherboard LEDs not on when power is supplied) but any help and advice is appreciated, thank you.

Did you flash the BIOS prior to the CPU replacement?

Before I replaced my R3 with my R5 I updated to the latest BIOS version and the CPU worked fine but RAM slots 3 and 4 caused beep codes on startup when I upgraded my CPU (it was fine before I upgraded).

as both of them say.

youre MOBO needs a bios update to work with that CPU

Ryzen 5 3600 needs bios version   4801 while your old CPU could run on bios 0406

ohh you answered meanwhile,

please check your bios version so see if  it 4801 or newer

maybe because of the single - dual rank requirements, check the manual.

clean the sticks before hand, sometimes dusty sticks won't run.

would be lovely if you can spray some electronic contact cleaner to the slots.

Error codes in 3 and 4 would be normal depending on how your motherboard wants it's ram plugged in. Check the manual to be sure

as I said in the OP, the system does nothing when I press the power button or short the pins on the motherboard for power. Beep codes would be a miracle.

this is solid advice.

Yesterday i had a similar issue with a system.

Had to reseat the ram several times, and had to clean the cpu socket with air "opening" and "closing" the retention lever to clean the socket.

Good luck

Earlier when I read this I was simply going to reply with how there could possibly be no bent CPU pins but when I took my CPU out of its socket for an inspection I saw one bent pin. When I put in my old 1300X and turned PSU switch on, the motherboard light lit up. When I then fixed my 3600 and put it in, it too made the LEDs light up and the system perfectly POSTed as well as my previous memory issue resolved.

This is odd as I took the 3600 out a few days ago to check for bent pins to try and fix the memory issue so either I bent them after that by putting it in the socket or I didn't have a close enough eye.

TL;DR: I fixed my system and the issue was merely a bent CPU pin.

Thank you everybody for your support.
