Helping a family member chose cpu

xven

So i am a lucky bastard and everyone comes to me to build their systems. For some reason they believe i am a genius because i did my pc and i try to keep my setup as clean as possible lol.

So this family member has a pretty unlimited budget and they are trying to build a gaming/streaming system and my only questions is what cpu to go with.

I was thinking a 9900ks to push 5.1+ on the oc for gaming performance, but i want everyones takes on the 10900k chips as it would add 2 cores while pushing 5hz ish.

Or should i just stick to amd with a 3900 or 3950 ? please have real arguments over the price to performance the dude has a ferrari and a rolls royce... money aint a issue for him he just wants the best of the best.

If they have an unlimited budget then just get the better option ignoring price. Also look at the AMD side of things as well, they have some pretty powerful processors at a lower price, and even though you don't need to worry about money, everyone loves to save it.

I don't know much about the newer CPUs... I learn most of what I know about computers by looking at this forum, and it hasn't been discussed much (that I've seen at least).

Get two systems then, one for gaming and one dedicated to screen capture. Could wait for 10900k and see what's what, tho the sceen capture machine preferably has the best of the best CPU which means a Threadripper for h264 encoding.at ridiculously demanding profile (verysloww I think is the name)

Was told to look into a 10980 also

For gaming and most workloads i worse than the 9900k/3900x.

Is formfactor a consideration? Perhaps ITX is appealing.

A couple thoughts:

With that money, get the best.  2080ti (strix, gaming trio) and if not a 9900KS now, then a 10900K if you wait that long to build it.

Kyle did a nice comparison of 3900 and 9900K when ryzen 3 launched, and while you can technically stream using better / "slow" x264 encoding on the 3900 vs really maxing out at x264 medium on the 9900k (without causing frame drops), you consistently get better streamer side (AKA his performance) in FPS on the 9900K.  From streaming myself, I will take better FPS on my side vs being able to use slow encoder setting (which you cant distinguish from medium...you just cant).  I get 0 dropped frames on my 9900k on medium settings with fantastic FPS on my end.

Take into consideration this as well (I know you didnt bring this up, but consider cooling); dude with that kind of money asking you to build a PC is likely going to want something working, good performance, and reliable.  While he can certainly afford to pay for a custom loop to cool his components, a guy like that is not going to want to waste his time messing with that maintenance (elsewise he would be building his own PC).  Get him a really good air cooler or AIO for his CPU so he can set it and forget it.

This vidwo will help -

It is somewhat of a rant but it does go into the AMD vs Intel at the high end.

i spoke with him about running two systems i would of when 9900ks for the gaming and a 3950 for streaming machine but he said he only wanted a single pc.... Plus i was told with nvidia gpu if you use nvidia nvenc encoder that a single pc will easily run a stream.

We live about 20 minutes from each other, i would do the maintenance for him without any issues. The 10900k is already available from what i see online or i am wrong ?

With a 2080ti using nvidia nvenc encoder he could run his stream extremely easily from my base knowledge. I did have a friend streaming on a 2600 and a rtx 2060 using nvidia nvenc encoder and he streams apex legends with no drop frames and the stream is smooth.

That is true, but you said you want the best.

Current day then 9900k + dual 2080Ti in SLI (Titan RTX and Titan V are too expensive) make the most sense.

I already ordered evga ftw3 2080 ti ultra x2.

He really doesnt want to hear it about the pc setup sadly.

From my base reading so far is that the 9900ks is the only better gaming chip over the 10980xe really but then the questions is will the extra cores of the 10980xe help for this streaming pc or not really.

It worsens gaming performance, and if you use NVENC it won't help with streaming either

NVENC(new) does help with streaming on a single PC (its what I use) instead of it going form gpu, cpu, memory, its gpu only for the encoding. Which is really great of the RTX cards cause it was made for them specifically.

Nah, after all controlling two systems for two apps is kinda complex. You wont be able to trick him for very long.

Besides the ITX system cant capture if you use Ryzen which has more cores but no iGPU because you need a capture card for the only PCIe slot

Ya I was gonna say, while with unlimited money thats the most feasible time to build 2 systems, that kind of person probably doesnt want to mess around with 2 boxes and setting up OBS on one, gaming on the other, that is PC enthusiast land.  Ironically most of the people with that level of enthusiasm dont have the funds to build or mess around with those set ups.

So i am still on the edge with a 9900ks and a 10980xe but yea i am trying to make it as easily as possible for him to use.
