Canon lenses for beginner

Hi guys, so a friend of my just sold his 450D and a 18-55mm IS kit lens to me, but the kit lens has a black spot in between the lens, and i'm planning to buy a new lens. I've found the following used lenses:

-EF-S 18-55mm f4:5.6 STM(around 40$)

-EF 50mm f1.8 II (around 45$)

-EF 50mm f1.8 STM (around 65$)

So what would be a good replacement? A newer kit lens (18-55mm f4:5.6 STM) or a prime lens (50mm f1.8 II/STM)? Is there any differences between the two 50mm lenses i mentioned above?

The 50 mm Primes are good, but on a crop sensor body they give the field of view equivalent to a 80 mm on a full frame sensor. This will sort of limit you in what you may want to photograph (its kind of a portrait-y focal length, but not so suitable for travel/landscape). The STM lens is faster, quieter, and has a shorter minimum focus range, so I would say is worth the $20, optically it is the same as the version 2, so its kind of down to your budget.

I would definitely have the zoom since it lets you take photos of different things more comfortably but also grab the prime that lets you take higher quality shots when the focal length matches your needs.

look at a 18-135 they are a great all around lens.

if you plan on lots of night or low light you could grab a 17-50/17-55 f2.8 pair it with a 75-300 III/ IIIUSM if you need a telephoto

spend the extra on the better autofocus. look at 35 or 24mm primes as well.

you are correct lol. it is LITERALLY a clone of the 50... but its cheaper and it works so you can buy new instead of taking the risk of going used.

Don't Judge my spelling I'm dyslexic

I'd go with the 24-105mm 3.5-5.6 IS STM. I shot with the 24-105mm f.4 L IS USM lens for years as my only lens and it worked out great. Though, this depends on precisely what you're shooting.

System Specs: Second-class potato, slightly mouldy

  • 3 weeks later...

So i have bought an used EF 50mm f1.8 II for 40$, as well as other 2 used zoom lenses for 50$: EF 80-200mm f4.5-5.6 USM and an EF 28-90mm f4-5.6 II. What else do i need? I mostly do landscape, portrait and small figures (about 6 inch tall)
