Motherboard VRM Tier List v2 (currently AMD only)

This is a fantastic thread.

 

I've been thinking of upgrading to a Ryzen 5800x. Games on my 1700 run at solid average frames, but recently I've really been noticing lots of dips and choppyness.

 

I'm curious what people think of the Aorus B550 Pro V2 and B550 Tomahawk. Both are highly regarded.

 

I mostly want to try an MSI board since I hear the bios is great to work with. However the board looks worse. Is that realistically a problem? I'll do CPU overclocking and memory to 3600 with lowest timings. Maybe try to go higher if bored, but it sounds like it's not really worth it.

 

The MSI seems to have fewer USB ports (doesn't matter) and worse memory overclocking topology. What does everyone here think?

 

Edit: It looks like I'd never utilize the extra Aorus memory potential. It also looks like the Tomahawk is popular on here, so maybe I'll do that.

Asus:

best bios, best looking (personal opinion), higher price, bad customer support

 

MSI: decent bios, decent look, dectn price, better customer support than Asus

 

Gigabyte and Asrock: Bad bios, bad look (depend on the board, but personal opinion), somewhat competitive pricing, decent customer support in my experince.

 

if you want good bios nad looks go for Asus, if you want good enouhg bios and decent look, with great pricing go for MSI

Yeah, the layout of the Gigabyte bios is kind of clunky. It isn't pretty either, but I'd give it a pass if everything else was great. In my experience you also have to save profiles/settings to an external usb. In the past I lost settings a few times because I forgot to back it up externally.

I'm not a big fan of Asus, but I'm not against them. I find both Gigabyte and MSI cheaper for what you get. I've owned Asus and Gigabyte, never MSI. I was planning to try MSI but it looks like they offer worse audio chips on most of their boards compared to Asus and Gigabyte.

Still a small manufacturer, even within China they are treated as the lesser brand. Smaller brands are more likely to have quietly changed hardware over time that affects performance (heck not like the big 4 never did it either) and there just isnt anyone keeping track of these things.

So, considering I have a B450m Mortar Max, should I be worried running a Ryzen 9 5900x? Any throttling, crash or freeze issues? Or would it run at boost clock with no issues?

It's fine if you let it run at stock settings, just make sure the case airflow doesn't suck

Is this considered a good case airflow? So, you're saying I won't have throttling and downclocking issues, right? Even being a Tier-C mobo, is it enough?

is that a solid front or mesh front? That little gap between the plastic/glass alone doesn't seem enough. Your AIO is also configured to push air outside, so it's no help with the lack of air coming in either

It's a glass front with little gap and no mesh. What do you recommend me to do?
Edit: picture is not showing but there are 3 front intake fans and 2 side intake fans.

Just leave the CPU running at stock then. It's like 60% power than if it's overclocked as much as possible on water cooling.

Thx, that's my idea, run at stock. I was just worried if I'll get throttling at stock on this mobo.

I don't know how you will do a Z690 list.    Am I the only one who perceives it as not making sense?

The Gigabyte Z690 boards - such as Gaming X, UD AX, Aorus Elite AX - supposedly have good vrms but the temps in comparison benchmarks seem higher than comparable brands by Asus and MSI.  Yet, the power consumption for those boards are pretty low.   MSI's power consumption seems higher than the others - yet, they have decent temps and vrm.   Asus boards - seem in the middle although the Tuf Gaming consistently had pretty good results for a DDR4 board.   There's almost no benchmarks to be found with the Asrock Extreme and Legend.  

There's VRM info from their website specs and a few youtubers have examined the vrm and hardware chips on the boards - but, I like to see benchmarks and comparisons between boards.

Asrock B450m Steel Legend

Seasonic Focus Gold gx-850w

Palit 3070 Gaming Pro

 

This happen after upgrade my processsor from 3600 to 5600x at first i keep got bluescreen when playing game like rdr2 or metro exodus this is maybe because i put the fans wrong make bad airflow and i fix it.

 

But reading this thread make me thinking about my motherboard. Do you think i need to buy a better motherboard like msi b550 tomahawk or atleast i can buy tier A like b550 steel legend?

Are you using latest BIOS and chipset driver? The board's good enough for a 5600x at stock.

yeah its already the latest BIOS when last time i check but im gonna try to update my chipset driver. so i should be fine except i want to upgrade or do some OC.

this board quite good despite the brand, already upgrade multiple times but they still support the board.

preferably, 105w stock TDP is still too much for this board so you'll have to slow the CPU down further.

Im getting a third m.2 for free by my brother and im thinking of switching my MSI MPG X570 GAMING PLUS with GigabyteB550 Aorus Master or ASROCK X570 Taichi, is there a difference between these 2 regarding quality and vrm performance that i should think of?

 

As long as they support AM4 (5900x this being my case) and 3x m2 slots it should be good.. And these looks like the ones that are avaible in norway right now.
