Not that I'm aware of. VRM does look comparable to the B550 Unify.

Aaaagh..I need help..I've been following this thread for a while but still can't decide on a a mobo.

I'm doing a new build, I've got a ryzen 5900x + a z63 kraken cooler and a corsair 4000x case.

Initially I was more or less set on the x570 Aorus Master, then the x570s Aorus Master (I don't need dual LAN).

The thing is, I don't need 4 m2s, so I thought I'd consider b550 and was looking at ROG B550-E, but then reading some of the comments here Motherboard VRM Tier List v2 (currently AMD only) - Page 46 - CPUs, Motherboards, and Memory - Linus Tech Tips , maybe not. And now I started to consider the X570S Tomahawk.

Any thoughts, @Jurrunio ?

Why do you need those high end B550 and X570 boards to begin with?

Fair point 🙂

Simply put, pcie4, 4000mhz+ ram support. As I see it, this generation of zen is at its end in terms of further development, so I'm trying to  make this build last as long as possible, leaving room for OC'g different scenarios for the next few years. I have a mobo budget up to the value of the x570s aorus master so I thought, why not just invest in that now instead of buying a cheaper mobo now and then having to consider another when I need more features in the next two years.

Neither of these are exclusive to high end boards, nor would running memory with Zen at 4000MT/s be wise in a lot of cases, due to the fact that getting the I/O die to run at 1:1 with 4000MT/s+ memory is an incredibly difficult task, and so running the I/O die in 2:1/ out of sync with the memory would only hurt performance, and as such, getting a lower frequency memory, i.e a 3600/3800 kit with tighter timings and having the ability to run it at 1:1 would be a better decision.

The main difference between B550 and X570 being the extra PCIE Gen 4 lanes provided by the chipset on X570 that B550 lacks, aside from that, and assuming you don't need the extra Gen 4 lanes, B550 could and are of the same quality as equivalent X570 boards.

What's your budget for a board, and what's your currency and location?

PC: Motherboard: ASUS B550M TUF-Plus, CPU: Ryzen 3 3100, CPU Cooler: Arctic Freezer 34, GPU: GIGABYTE WindForce GTX1650S, RAM: HyperX Fury RGB 2x8GB 3200 CL16, Case, CoolerMaster MB311L ARGB, Boot Drive: 250GB MX500, Game Drive: WD Blue 1TB 7200RPM HDD.

Hello all,

I have a problem deciding which motherboard to choose. Currently, I want to buy a Ryzen 7 5800x (and OC it) and I know that each of the mentioned boards will be fine, but I would like to make a purchase, which in the future, if replaced, for example, with a Ryzen 9 5900x or 5950x, will not have a problem with operating without overheating with a reasonable OC.

After researching, I think about these:

  • ASUS ROG STRIX B550-A GAMING
  • ASUS ROG STRIX B550-F GAMING
  • Gigabyte B550 AORUS PRO V2 (I would personally choose this one)
  • Gigabyte X570 AORUS ELITE
  • MSI MAG B550 TOMAHAWK
  • ASRock B550 Extreme4

Which of these is the best purchase "for the future", or maybe with such an "investment" what else would you choose? As for the price range, I would not like to exceed $245 (1000 PLN - I'm located in Poland). I will mention that the CPU cooler is Dark rock 4 and the case is Phanteks P400a rgb or Lian Li LANCOOL II Mesh Performance, I have not yet decided.

I also wanted to ask what frequencies of RAM memory should I choose? 3200 or 3600?

Thanks a lot!

Yes, I know those points are not exclusive to the high end boards but my budget covers enough for these boards, so I thought might as well get higher end boards with decent vrms to cover for future tweaking.

I'm in the UK, currency in GBP and my budget is around £340 for the mobo.

B550 Tomahawk is the one I like the most out of them, realistically it will be the cheapest between the B550-A, B550-F (black B550-A basically), Aorus B550 Pro and B550 Tomahawk

What matters is lower latency, bigger number by dividing frequency with CAS latency (CL) is better. 4x8gb is also preferable over 2x16gb or 2x8gb in terms of performance because of 2 ranks per channel unless you aim for Samsung B-die with 2x16GB. More ranks even makes 3200 faster than the best single rank per channel kit on Zen 3.

Then all of those boards are good. MSI probably have the least things I dont like (Gigabyte has difficult BIOS, Asus has overpricing habit, Asrock has inferior hardware for the same price)

Thanks for that. I haven't used a GB board yet so that's handy to know 🙂

Btw, between the x570s tomahawk , X570S EDGE MAX WIFI, x570s carbon max wifi, x570s ace max - apart from difference in onboard ports, features, connectors etc, I know the VRMs are different (but it seems they're all decent, right?), is there anything else I should consider when choosing these boards?

Tomahawk could have slightly worse memory overclocking but everything else you cant see should be similar.

Good afternoon.

TUF GAMING B550-PLUS     10-phase[8+2] Vishay Dr.MOS SiC639 50A
TUF GAMING B450M-PRO II  10-phase[8+2] Vishay Dr.MOS SiC639 50A
TUF GAMING B450M-PRO S   10-phase[8+2] Vishay Dr.MOS SiC639 50A
ASUS TUF GAMING B450-PLUS II    ?

The asus website says: The onboard VRM of TUF Gaming B450-PLUS II utilizes 8+2 DrMOS power stages that combine high-side and low-side MOSFETs and drivers into a single package, delivering the power and efficiency that 3rd Gen AMD Ryzen™ Processors demand.

There is information on the Internet that ASUS TUF GAMING B450-PLUS II is identical to the list above.

If true, the result is B450-PLUS II Tier A: 200A. If so, please edit the Tier List information. Thanks.

There's a comma in between, ITX refers to the X570 I Aorus Pro which is the only mITX board by Gigabyte on this chipset

mITX is a type of board smaller than mATX, but it's not called nanoATX

So is the B450 Tuf Plus II (mATX) tier A too? Would like to get it if it is as it's pretty cheap near me lol

No, TUF Plus II mATX is the only TUF II board stuck at low tiers  (tier E) since the VRM hasnt changed from the TUF non-II model

I am planning a build with Ryzen 5 5600G, 16GB of 3600 MHz RAM sticks, and i will probably overclock it (not extremely). Also gonna pair it with an RTX 2060 Super or an RTX 3060 Ti. Currently i am eyeing on the Asrock B550m Pro4, but from reading around, for this build, going B550 is not necessary? This is going to be a 5 Year Build, and here Asrock B550m Pro4 is the a good balance between price and the VRM quality (here it's roughly $110 and it's tier B in the list)

Am i wasting too much money since i am probably not going to touch the ryzen 7 and 9 series for a while? Mostly gaming usecase with little programming and productivity tasks

It's tier C. The VRM powering the iGPU is not covered by any heatsink to I wouldnt overclock the GPU. Its price is good enough.

Or maybe 5600x if you have a graphics card already

ah my bad, the x570 one is the one in the B tier

That's cool to hear.

do you have rec for a similarly priced (or close enough, like $20 difference) b450? would it be enough for this?

Msi's tier D boards maybe? 7nm 6 core is low enough in power draw for those to be alright. Asus' tier A b450 refresh boards are also nice but I'm not sure about their price

I just got a Ryzen 2600 with an E-tier motherboard (Asus B450 Prime Plus) with an NH-D14, does that mean I should not overclock it?

pretty much unless you can monitor the vrm temperatures externally.

Given this topic's age I figure it's fair to ask at this point if there's any plans on making a version for/including intel boards?

Currently all the ATX boards (except Asrock, lack of info) are good even for the 12900k with OC. The concerning boards are mATX and mITX and I couldnt find info on them.
