Which Xeon? Is there a budget consideration? For higher end gaming, I'd get either a Zen 2 or recent i7 or higher.

AMD / Intel / Consumer / Server. None of these labels matter. It comes down to the performance of the actual specific models and frequency.

Out of maybe a million Xeons out there? Depends. They perform the same as Core series with the same core count and architecture if they run the same frequency though, just no more iGPU.

12XX xeons with ddr4 can game decently if they have 3.5ghz baseclock.

Most Xeons are low speed but high cored, they are optimized for optimum parallel computing for the lowest energy consumption.

Not really worth it if the cost of the motherboard is high.

if you somehow already have a mobo and access to a affordable/cheap high end xeon, could be a great deal.  For more normal situation or if you can upgrade Ryzen 3000 makes way more sense, heck even 2000 series. 

Pretty much all Intels but 8700k, 9700k, and 9900k are old news worse then almost anything you could get out of last gen Ryze, compared to 3000 those 3 or so atleast represent insane 4.7-5.1ghz clockspeeds, lesser but still recent intels mostly being decent but not amazing.

x58 chipset and corresponding x56** cpus is dirt cheap, sometimes

 

outweigh the cost of going xeon, whichever xeon it is, to a used refurbished pc, or simpletons ryzen buildup.
