Memory speed issues despite XMP being enabled

Calm down, the coloum on the left is the settings the board will take at boot while the coloum on the right is the XMP profile settings. Just set the value on the left to 32 and you can save and exit the bios.

Hi all, new member here!

I have an issue with my RAM speed despite XMP being enabled.

I have 2 x 8gb 3200mhz g.skill tridentz rgb series ram installed on an Aorus x470 Ultra Gaming motherboard.

I have a Ryzen 2700x CPU and have updated both the mobo bios to the latest (f42g) and chipset drivers to the latest on Windows 10.

However on windows task manager it only shows speed as 2133mhz.

On CPU-z it is even worse and shows as 1066mghz!

On the bios settings I have activated “profile1” xmp and the same issue persists.

On the “system memory multiplier” row it shows one column as “auto” and the other column as “32.00”

I cannot click on the “32.00” to amend it.

And the “memory frequency “ row shows one column “3200mhz” and the next column the incorrect “2133mhz”.

I cannot click on the “2133mhz” to amend it either.

The ram is in position 0+2. I tried using position 1+3 and swapping the ram around but no help. The issue remains and the ram continues to run at 2133 MHz despite “XMP” activated. (I am counting position 0 to be the one closest to the cpu and 3 to be the furthest, so 0,1,2,3 in that order).

I tried to deactivate XMP and switch the computer off and on and then reactivate and switch the computer off and on etc but still no help.

I have attached screenshots to what I am referring to.

I hope someone can help!

Thanks

That one is normal because it's the DRAM, it is half the ram frequency so you should have 1600mhz if it was running the 3200mhz properly.

For the XMP I don't know usually the motherboard is supposed to use the higher frequency available with the XMP enabled :/

I dont know nor care if mouse control in the BIOS works or not, but it's the "Auto" next to the 32 that you should change. If mouse doesn't work, use the keyboard's arrow keys, +, - keys, escape key and enter key.

that's normal, DDR memory's data rate (the commonly used number) is double that of the actual operating frequency because DDR means double data rate, or sending data twice per operating cycle.

I think it's what @Jurrunio said, I can check on my bios (it's also a Gigabyte) when i get home if it's still not resolved.

Amazing thank you I will give that a go and try using the + and - keys on my keyboard to amend the "32" to make it "auto". I was thinking that it was strange I couldn't change it because it was white. I was controlling the XMP on / off setting by using my keyboards arrow keys.

I will try that as soon as I get home from work

Well I'm not sure about this motherboard - and I'm not sure what you may have already changed etc

I would do the following : reset CMOS (plug the power from wall,  remove CMOS battery, wait 5 minutes, put it back in)

And then set XMP to XMP profile 2 > save & restart > check the frequency in cpu z or task manager.

Reason being most motherboards use XMP2 for the correct overclock,  and it's really just that easy but it's also important to not change any other settings in order for this to work.

So going on the bios and pressing the + or - only switches from “disabled” to “profile1”. There is no “profile 2”.

then the next row with the “system memory multiplier”, pressing the + or - only amends the one column on the left. And the column on the right seems to be stuck on 32.00 2133MHz!

am I missing something, I tried pressing tab to maybe highlight the row on the right and I tried to double click it but just can’t seem to amend it!

Edit: this is some general trouble shooting you could do,  but please disregard and see my next post.  I don't think it's worth messing with this specific motherboard as it has known issues with XMP

...

You still should reset the CMOS,  might seem drastic but somethings not right.

You should also be able to control the bios with a mouse...

Check in your manual that there's really only one XMP profile too,  that seem rather strange.

And also check your ram is on the recommended vendor list of your motherboard manufacturer.

PS: also are you really sure you "save & exit" after setting the XMP?

Because if you don't there will be no change naturally.

Idk just thinking of reasons why this wouldn't work for you  assuming profile 1 *is* actually the right profile...

After doing some research - your motherboard is a mess and has generally issues with XMP.

You should have done some research prior purchase,  if I may say that.

You can try this

https://www.techpowerup.com/download/ryzen-dram-calculator/

but don't ask me how it works I never used it,  I just know it's a reputable program and works.

Or you return your motherboard and get one that doesn't have known issues with XMP overclocking (that would be my suggestion)

Lol really? That would be embarrassing for me if it is!
If it is, I Wonder why it won’t clock at 3200mhz if I select XMP and the speed shows as 3200.
either way I’ll give that a go and report back.
If that doesn’t work I’ll take the cmos battery out and try that route.

thanks again for all your help!

That's the bevaiour of Asus and I think MSI boards. Asrock and Gigabyte still needs user input for frequency, even though all of them scale timings according to XMP profile when you run different frequency settings with the same timings.

@Jurrunio you are an absolute legend. I have had many, MANY, problems with my PC

in the last year or so and I just got new ram sticks and was struggling with setting them up for 2 days now and began to think they just wont work because my PC is cursed. Your solution instantly worked. You are amazing, thank you. I know the thread is old but I hope you see this, you blessed being.
