I work as an IT Helpdesk agent.

What I love about my job is that I get to talk to other techs and I get different perspectives on how to troubleshoot and fix stuff. And of course, the pay is nice.

If you worked in network / hardware maintenance, it's pretty boring if everything runs as intended.

You can sleep all day if you want to, unless there's a hardware problem.

I work as a network engineer and my job basically involves trying to break solutions and other things and tell the customer what I broke :D

I get paid fairly well, have great coworkers, and it's a wonderful environment to work in. I don't think I've ever really dreaded going in unless I had to do some all-day training which is very rare (thankfully).

  1. Telecommute.
  2. The work is challenging and further hones my problem solving skills every day.
  3. We have a wide berth in terms of SLA (Service Level Agreement) to get the job done correctly instead of emphasizing only speed of resolution.
  4. 99.99999% of the time, I do not have to work with end users?

working helpdesk in a consultancy with some.. "special" customers..

best thing is every day is something new, just this week we had a client come in with a problem that made the entire office go "wait.. what now?"

also, the way people communicate with their IT partner is absolutely hilareous.. they go third person level of formal, and then forget that their significant other's name also shows up in our mailbox as "sexy knight"..

bonus is that some of our clients actually see us as wizards :D

What are you career plans if you don't mind me asking? Do you plan to stay as a help desk person in the foreseeable future?

It depends really... but if I do manage to find a better opportunity, I'll probably jump ship.

What i meant was do you plan to stay as a help desk. I'm asking because I used to lead a team of help desk techs in the past and i always encouraged them to learn more about higher level IT.

Ah, I see what you mean.

This is actually my first helpdesk job. My previous jobs were all in-house "IT Guys". The type where people in the office call you because they can't send email.

About higher level IT stuff, I used to have a CCNA certification about 6 years ago. Never renewed it since I couldn't afford the review/exam fees at the time.

Interested in cloud computing? There is a course on udemy that prepares you for AWS Certified Solutions Architect Associate for $11 USD. Also the exam is only $150 USD. It can definitely open doors for you, especially lucrative doors lol.

Pay (for the "work" I do, I'm employed by the gov't) is stupid high, no overtime, no weekends, the perks are amazing, plus I get to play video games most of the day because we have nothing to do all day.

Downside? Dealing with the weapons-grade stupidity that only the gov't can produce.

NOTE: I no longer frequent this site. If you really need help, PM/DM me and my e.mail will alert me.

I appreciate the help, but "real life responsibilities" are also preventing me pursue further studies like that. I'm quite content with what I have. Plus I do side-jobs from time to time (working as an on-site tech) so I think time will be an issue.

I work in IT governance, its loads of fun and I get to do really interesting non tech stuff but while still working in IT and dealing with computer stuff.

Having a decent understanding of how a personal computer works and Windows (plus a few programs) really helps me when I talk to the techhy guys.

In the end my job is to build and improve the governance and quality frameworks which helps them do their job better.

It was amazing and fun for the full 5 weeks because I got fired, the government found out about my crappy math grades from school.

The IT jobs in the private sector all required fancy education and experience, the one in the government didn't.. But they demanded really good grades, especially in math...

So now I'm stuck in the regular service industry working 55 hours a week while wanting to hang myself every evening I come home.

Damn. Don’t do nothing like bro.

Ever thought of doing maths again?

Also, didn’t you have IT certificates already when you entered the job? like ccna or something and if you did, didn’t they care about that?

I love the technical side of my job ad an Enterprise and Mainframe support chap. The general customer hand holding I find frustrating at times and the politics in my role drives me nuts. However, when something really needs a lot of troubleshooting the. I love it. On the rare occasions when the proverbial hits the fan I am in my element. I love those pressure moments and all the problem solving involved. The problem is, the kit we make is mature and very reliable as a result. It had better be as some of it costs millions to buy and more per year for support. So the interesting periods are just too rare.
