8+6 pin GPU, 8 pin PSU

I have a Corsair CX450 PSU. I recently ordered an XFX RX5700, which has 8+6pin power. Can I use the card with just 8 pin power, and if so, what would be the performance constraints to that?

I guess if you also have molex you could use a 2x molex to 6pin.. but I don't reccomend.. if your psu doesn't have the cables it's likely unwise to do so

The reference RX5700 from AMD lists a recommended PSU with at least 600W. While that might be a bit over the top i would highly recommend you get more then the 450W one you have right now. If your PSU does not have an additional 6 pin it might be because its not made for supporting a GPU with more power draw!

Do yourself a favor and upgrade at least to a 550W PSU with 8+6 pin power.

You fell for the wattage trap again, A good quality 450w PSU can power the 5700 and a 8 core CPU, period.

That depends on how many components OP has, but majority of the time, those who says that, never uses those low wattage psu themselves in the first place.

The card needs both the 6 and 6+2 to be plugged in order to power up the card.

Get a new PSU that comes with at least a single 6 pin and a 6+2 pin. If it has two 6+2 pins that's even better.

I do. My 5820K and GTX1070 are powered by a Corsair SF450. It's my secondary rig now, after I upgrade to a 3900X and 5700XT.

 

Years ago, EVGA made an itx case. Which came with a 500w 80+ gold power supply. People put 4790K and 980Ti in.

 

Many mid-range system barely draw more than 350w under full load. A good quality 450-500w PSU can handle it without breaking a sweat.

Alright, thank you. I may just resell the card and get something like a used 2060 or 1660ti. I went kind of overkill on the GPU with the RX 5700 anyway, since I'm really not going to be gaming at anything over 1080p, and I don't really play many games that are so graphically intensive that it cannot be handled by a 2060.

To be honest, my original budget for the GPU upgrade was $200, $250 max. I'm already over my budget, not even looking at the higher-tier PSU that I'd have to buy. Additionally, I'd be going through the trouble of returning my current PSU, looking through something like EVGA B-stock PSUs, and more, and I already have a headache from everything. Besides, I was looking to upgrade my Ryzen 5 2400g as well, and if I go with the RX5700 and an even more expensive PSU I'd have no room for that.

 

Here's the price breakdown of my components: (including tax)

 

Case: $64 (need it for the extra room, to fit everything in. I have a micro-atx case rn and it's about to explode, especially because I have a non-modular PSU. and I wanted to go for something a little more easy on the eyes than my current thermaltake versa h15, so I spent a little more on the case. better to spend more now, than to spend even more later on)

GPU: $307

SSD: $35

 

That comes to $406. My maximum budget is around $500. That means I can fit a decent PSU in, and no CPU. It's easier to get a slightly worse GPU, resell the new RX5700 for a bit of a profit, and spend the rest on a CPU and lower-tier PSU. Do you have another way to fit in a case, decent GPU, SSD, CPU, and PSU for this budget?

But why? Unless you're using a 2080TI and doing things in 1080p at minimum settings, it's highly unlikely to ever bottleneck anything, at least for the next several years.

That would be my expert suggestion. The 2400g is no slouch, and don't believe anyone that says otherwise. 4-core, 8-thread, and Zen+ is more than enough for anything currently out on the market.

Depends on your location, but in the USA, it's possible. In the USA it's highly doubtful you'll find a better choice for a decent GPU than the 5700 at less than the $350 price point, in addition to those components, unless you're willing to wait for the RX 5500.

Definitely go with a better psu - a good quality 550W unit will be great and you probably won’t have to change it in the next 6-10 years or so. 

 

You mention you game at 1080P. A good card to pick up for that could be a RX570 - I’ve heard in America they can go fairly cheap online. Maybe a 1660, not sure on pricing tho. 

 

As for cpu, a 2400G isn’t that bad at all. If you were To update tho perhaps a 3600 if that fits within $500 budget ( and it should if you go with a cheap GPU like rx570)

Sorry, should have specified: most games run fine with my Rx 570 if I play at lower settings. One thing that I have problems on is Minecraft, because it depends on the CPU heavily, and specifically, single-threaded performance.

I was going to step down, since I went overkill on the GPU anyway. Honestly right now, my Rx570 is doing okay, I just wanted a little performance bump, maybe like used 1660s or something.

With a good PSU and case, I doubt there would be enough for a 1TB NVMe. Maybe like 250, 500gb.

What sort of performance are you trying to get out of it? With SEUS shaders I was doing better than 90-180 FPS with my 2400g and a 5700XT at 1080p... (and that didn't change AT ALL going up to a 3600)

And you're not going to get back more than you paid, plus you'll likely have to pay shipping for anyone to take it from you instead of Newegg.

You're unlikely to get a good price for anything better than what you have now, (even used) especially considering how high the 5700 is on the price to performance scale. Considering the options between the 5700 and the 570, there really isn't anything out there worth the trouble.

Dude, I've been part-picking for PCs for the past 6 months... Not including monitors, peripherals, and GPUs, I've not gone over $500 for the builds, and the smallest SSD I design in is a $55 512GB NVMe. Note that these are all using a $60 case, because I like sound dampening.

I'm not running shaders. It's just that I'd like to be able to comfortably run 8+ render distance with Optifine, 5zig, keystrokes, etc. on a busy lobby with 200+ player entities in a small map. Right now I'm barely hitting 40 with my R5 2400G + Rx 570 with 6 render distance.

I've been looking at eBay sell prices and some people have lifted them off for $320 + shipping. Not a lot of profit, but I can't return it on Newegg either so I don't really have a choice

Yeah, I understand. I think I might just upgrade my CPU, PSU, case, etc.

I'd have recommended a molex adapter if it was a cheap GPU. But since it's not, I think it's best to invest in a new PSU as well.
