MacBook Pro vs MacBook Air (2019)

I’m starting college next year and I will be studying computer science amongst other subjects. 
I’m looking to buy a new laptop to aid my education in the following years. I cannot decide between spending the extra money on the Pro compared to the Air. The air is lighter which will make carrying it less effort. However the pro has a 4 core processor which will make compiling code much quicker. 
I’m wondering if using the Air will be powerful enough to compile code on its dual core processor and whether it’s best off saving extra and getting the Pro

Get the pro. They aren't that much heavier and are miles more powerful. The air is nice for it's battery life but is sorta shit if you are actually doing anything with it

I am Wirsing this on a pro right now. WAY more power. Especially with compiling you will have way shortened times to do that. Small egos for me with music production. And the pro has the Touch Bar (sometimes usefull, most of the time BS :D

In terms of the CPU, it does depend on the sorts of projects that you'll be working on. For the majority of student-sized projects (10s to 1000s of lines of code), compilation doesn't take long (<5s), so more performance won't help you there - the majority of the time with most languages and build tools is spent managing dependencies and things like that, which I believe is more IO/network dependent.

At runtime there is more of a difference, but it really depends what you're doing. If you will be writing small java/C/haskell/etc programs, you're unlikely to see a benefit from more performance. On the other hand, if you're expecting to be doing lots of machine learning, data science, graphics processing, etc, the time spent running the program starts to increase and you will definitely benefit from having more performance.

 

Another factor to consider is the RAM - if you're doing any of the more intensive tasks, you're running VMs, or you just have a big Java project with lots of data, the 8GB of ram that the base spec macbook air comes with may well turn out not to be enough, although I know plenty of people who got by fine with less than that.

 

Your university probably has machines that you can use for more intensive computation, so if you're only going to be doing more intensive work occasionally then you won't need a more powerful laptop. Again, it depends on what your course will cover.

 

For an introductory computer science course, the macbook air will serve you absolutely fine. For more advanced courses, it really depends.

 

Is the air actually better for you though? The pro is still light enough to be carried in a rucksack without issue, although if you're walking a lot then you might prefer it to be as light as possible. Personally, I would say that the added cost of a pro over an air aren't justified for a student doing light programming, but everyone will have a different point at which it becomes worthwhile.
