29.23% of computers are still running Windows XP

TheWall

Original article: http://bit.ly/1in2dOo

So nearly 30% of computers are still running a 12 year old operating system... At least Vista is only on 3.3%

The figures come from NetMarketShare and are based on computers used to visit sites hosted by its statistics client. It found Windows 7 on 47.49 percent of machines, XP on 29.23 percent, Windows 8 on 6.63 percent, Windows 8.1 on 3.95 percent and poor old Vista on 3.3 percent, just ahead of Mac OS X.

The proportion of people using Windows XP actually rose in January. It may be little more than a statistical quirk, but the underlying story is what happens when Microsoft pulls the plug on support in barely two months.

How can so many people be willing to use such an old operating system?

If it aint broke, don't fix it mentality, especially with the older generation (baby boomers).

With XP updates being cut off, they better upgrade.

I would be willing to wager money that most of that 29% is computers in businesses.

I guess people are just so used to XP that they don't want to give it up... Very few of my school computers still run XP; pretty much everything else is updated to Windows 7.

Mainly schools in the United States but you'd be suprised how many people in asia & middle east use windows XP or even older. PC parts are a bit hard/expensive to come by in those parts.

Businesses and older people account for a majority of that I'm sure. Not everyone is an enthusiast and wants the latest and greatest. I didn't switcch off xp till months after 7 came out, though after my laptop used vista and I downgraded to xp at the time who can blame anyone for doing that... vista lol

Other than looks there has been made no changes to the OS since XP that is actually noticeable to the end user. Security is lacking and compatibility is starting to disappear though.

I have 2 PCs that have XP. One of them also has Vista on it. I don't upgrade my OS much so If one of my PC's get's an upgrade then the old OS goes to the lower PCs. My main PC has 7.

Well, they do need to be upgraded but they do work fine on XP.

My school has been using Core 2 Duo Windows 7 computers for the last few years. (Skipped right over Vista, thank god.)

I still use my trusty old XP disk for stuff like old laptops.

There you can clearly see how big the difference between the normal PC consumer is and the PC gamer.
Only 5% of Steam users still have Windows XP.
62% have Windows 7 and 20% Windows 8/8.1

The only reason I ever usually upgrade my operating system is HARDWARE COMPATIBLITY.  I'd venture to guess that these systems running XP are running hardware that is just as dated.  If you aren't running new hardware that needs a newer OS, there frankly isn't a reason to upgrade unless it's free to do so and you are confident that your system/files/network will be just as functional.

My grandmother still uses XP. Her computer has a Celeron CPU and two gigs of RAM. I guess they don't know any better and it's just good enough for what they need it for, which is nothing.

You'd be scared how many schools and large companies still use it.

I know that the Toronto District School Board, the largest in Canada, still has something crazy like a million computers still running Windows XP. Yeah, that's ALOT.

It will be mainly for commercial and businesses as most things like a mall touchscreen guide uses Windows XP. But if the OS works and functions for people I don't think they will upgrade.
