cpu core question

so I've been thinking and researching and haven't found a full answer so I'm going to look here. ok so if your gaming is a 4 core CPU or a 6 core going to be faster? I run a duel core and it seems to run fine for the most part so I've been thinking a quad core will be plenty. however I've heard the more cores the slower graphic processing can be in gaming so it seems like adding extra cores is pointless seeing I run a. intel 3.7 ghz duel core currently plan to upgrade to a 3.7 ghz quad core or a 3.6 ghz 6 core both amd options I see amd was heavily trashed a decade ago since Ryzen they've been better I my opinion.

What are you talking about?

More cores is almost always welcome - games currently use 8-16 threads/cores quite easily. 4 cores is currently the absolute minimum for most modern games and 6-8 cores are highly recommended. Hell, even Intel's 6-core i5s are starting to struggle in 2019 AAA games due to a lack of SMT.

Don't judge different CPU's by their GHz only. Especially not between Intel and AMD. The GHz at one end means something else on the other end.

 

What you're saying is "more cores is less performance per core" which is not always the case, but could be the case.

Check into tests of the game(s) you play to see if they benefit from having more cores generally and judge from there.

 

Then you can look at CPU's more clearly. And if it turns out CPU x and CPU y have the same per core performance, then you can judge how useful the extra cores would be potentially.

If your game can fully utilize 4 cores, having 6 cores helps in the sense your OS and any side/background won't fight with your game for system resources.

All of this is too confusing just state your computer parts and how much you can afford for an upgrade then we can tell you what makes sense doing.

Totally depends on the game. Some scale all the way up to 8 cores and theoretically the more the better. But with current games there is definitely a trend towards using more cores as quad core is no longer mainstream. Older games are all quad or less as that's what was mainstream for so many years. But IPC and frequency matter more for gaming than just number of cores. I'm not sure what you are saying about graphic processing. But I think you are talking about the GPU being the bottleneck and not the CPU. I would certainly invest in a 6+ core CPU in todays world as even the low end Ryzen CPUs will have 6 cores

This video is still very relevant although their testing suite is a bit aged:

 

Most dated would be their demonstration of FarCry, where FC5 basically chokes with anything fewer than 8 threads. In general, 4c/4t is probably the bare minimum today, with gains that scale more proportionally along with IPC than strictly core count alone.

 

Maybe we're past due for an update on this topic @LinusTech ? Considering the mid and high-end is packed with 6+ core offerings, you'd have to really scrape the bottom of the barrel to get down to 4c/4t nowadays.

No, it is not - 4 cores is not enough for 2019 AAA games - you get stuttering in some even on modern quad-cores.

Well, I disagree but will keep an open mind if I see evidence to the contrary. In my experience, every currently active gaming rig I support have been variations of 4c/4t or 4c/8t core i5's and i7's dating back from Sandy bridge thru Skylake and playing games like BFV, FarCry 5, Kingdom Come, Anno 1800, Total War: Warhammer 2, Total War: Three Kingdoms. I just upgraded to a 3700X from an i7-6700, and it's done virtually nothing to my gaming performance even though I've doubled core and thread count.

It also depends on the card but if you try an i5 2500 or 3570 on Battlefield, you won't have a great time. It will stutter.

subsistence conans exiles outlaws of the old west 7 days to die ark survival evolved green hell the hunter call of the wild age of empires 2 empire earth from 2001 even i was amazed at that one will all work on my computer and i use an i3 lga 4170 3.7 ghs 2c4t 8 gigs of ddr3 1333 MHz ram along with a gtx 970 as my video card irronicly i can play most of these games on high/epic with some frame issues like in combat however that's in games like ark conans and 7 days to die green hell a 2018 game subsistence a 2017 game (i think) the hunter forget the time it came out and outlaws of the old went i play all of them on the highest graphical settings at 1080p its just extremely taxing on my computer however i keep a 40+ fps normally

More cores is almost always welcome - games currently use 8-16 threads/cores quite easily. 4 cores is currently the absolute minimum for most modern games and 6-8 cores are highly recommended. Hell, even Intel's 6-core i5s are starting to struggle in 2019 AAA games due to a lack of SMT.

I'd like to see the benchmarks in which 6-core chips "struggle" with AAA games, because I know people that have no issues running modern games with haswell, broadwell and skylake chips.

They bottleneck - it's the reason why the 3600, 8700K, 3700X, 9700K and etc beat out the i5s. Look at Gamers Nexus' review of the 3600.

We haven't played BFV on those, but we do play Battlefront 2 on the i5-3570K + GTX 1070 rig just fine. Of course this goes back to what I said earlier about IPC over core count alone, so I wouldn't get hung up on scrutinizing how well a 2011 quad core performs today; that's not the OP's question.

You went from "struggle" to bottleneck. Bottlenecks always depend on multiple factors - not the CPU alone.

I want to see that benchmark in which a 5775C bottlenecks a GTX 1660Ti at Full HD to the point that the game becomes not enjoyable anymore.
